I just listened to your latest appearance on PRT and wanted to thank you for something you said.

You said that you scrapbook as a HOBBY, and it is so rare to hear a mother say that. All of the scrapbooked I know personally have children and say that they scrapbook for their kids. That’s fine; I don’t care why people scrapbook. What bothers me is when they ask me why I bother to scrapbook because I don’t have children, nor do I plan to. They imply that I shouldn’t bother scrapbooking since I’m not doing it for anyone. When I tell them that I’ve made scrapbook pages about myself they seem shocked, like it’s a silly, selfish thing to do.

I scrapbook because I love it. It’s relaxing, it’s fun, and makes me happy. I’m not overly concerned about what happens to my books when I die. I scrapbook for me.

Thank you for reaffirming that it’s ok to scrapbook for yourself. Your attitude is refreshing and I wish your opinion would rub off on some of my scrapbooking friends!

I am so glad you’re doing it for yourself Jennifer!! I honestly believe that we only get to control what we can do for our own selves. We don’t know what our kids will want, like, or appreciate in the future. If they like my books, great, if they don’t, that’s ok, too. I do this cause it matters to me, it makes me happy, and allows me to preserve our stories. it makes me happy to play with pretty things 🙂 If it one day makes them happy too, that’s just bonus. We get to go through this precious life one time, and we might as well enjoy all the moments we can. If scrapping makes you happy, don’t let anyone else’s thoughts/opinions/comments take that away from you. You get to decide how to use your time and how to be happy 🙂
