Great tutorial! I finally upgraded to a Rebel T1i after scrapbooking for 10+ years, natural light photos are absolutely the best and I just wasn’t getting any good shots with my point and shoot.

I am really excited for next week – I am completely clueless when it comes to lenses and there are so many options out there. I will stay tuned!

Karen- I completely agree with you about the on-camera flash. It basically results in awful pictures every time. This is why I love my prime 50mm f1.8 lens for indoor pictures. I have seen many times, like at kids’ concerts or other indoor events, people with really fancy cameras and huge lenses who would seem to know something about photography using their little on-camera flashes and I’ve always wondered if they know something I don’t or if they just bought all the fancy equipment, but left their cameras on auto because they really don’t know how to use the camera. Give me with huge fancy lens, I actually know how to use it! I do have two questions, though. You touched briefly on fill flash, but I have found that I’ve gotten some nice photos, usually outdoors, using the flash as more of a fill flash. Will you talk about this more in an upcoming episode? Also, have you ever used a diffuser on the on-camera flash? Does it help at all or does it still take awful pictures? Thanks so much for your time!

  • Karen- Thank you for your clear and insightful videos. This is the first time I have listened to a photography tip/tutorial and actually understand what the heck the person is talking about. This is a very technical activity that can be complicated to explain and understand but you do such a wonderful job! Thank you! xoxo

lisa, i haven’t done one on fill flash yet but I can if you’d like. I don’t use it as much so I am not sure I’m the best person to talk about it. I have a diffuser on my external flash but i never ever use the on-camera flash. ever. apologies for my delayed response!!
