Books I Read This Week 2017 – 43

Byron Katie’s A Mind at Home with Itself is as magical as I knew it would be. If you’ve never read her, I can’t recommend her enough. If you have, I am sure you’ll read this anyway.

I wasn’t sure Unf*ck Yourself would be good. But it turned out to be useful and inspiring.

Forest Dark was okay. I read it on the plane and probably focused 70% on it but I am not sad I read it.

I started Turtles all the Way Down on audio but being that it was John Green, I couldn’t get myself to not switch to the book so I could read faster and look at his words like I like to. So I ended up reading the whole thing in one shot. I loveloveloveloved it. Don’t take my word on it, there are some great reviews of this book and why it’s very well written and very much worth your time.

I then dabbled into The No Asshole Rule to see if it would be worth it. It was okay. It would have been more helpful if I were some CEO or even manager.

I read The Sun and Her Flowers over the course of the week in the quiet mornings and I loved it. I will say that I loved her first book more but this one was magical all on its own. Some really sensitive material in case you haven’t read her before.

I had stared Sourdough before but I finally finished it on the plane back. It was okay but not amazing.

Here’s to more reading this week!

Books I Read This Week 2017 – 42

Conversations with Friends sounded like a book I might not like but I decided to tackle it anyway and while I didn’t love it, I did in fact like reading it.

I read Letters from Rifka as part of the Lit Club I run in my kids’ school for 5th and 6th grade. I’d never read it before and I loved it. Wonderful book about immigration.

I wasn’t sure The Four Tendencies had anything new to teach me. I have read all of Rubin’s books and I knew about the Tendencies already. But I love love loved this book and I am so very glad I read it. I learned tangible, useful takeaways from this book!

They Both Die at the End had also been on my pile for a while. I finally got to it and I am glad I did. It wasn’t fantastic but it was a really solid read.

I wasn’t sure about Warcross but I knew I wanted to at least give it a try. It was a quick, fast paced read. If you’re into that type of YA, it was good. Not excellent though.

I’ve been waiting to read Jane, Unlimited for months! I am a huge Kristin Cashore fan and have loved all of her books. I loved the premise of this book, too. I am about one quarter of the way in as I type this and I love it, of course.

I have some fantastic books on my pile and I cannot wait to read them all.

Books I Read This Week 2017 – 41

Some solid reading this week. I still have 30+ books checked out from the library and don’t really have hope of catching up to my list. But this also gives me more variety and makes me feel less pressure about finishing books I don’t like.

Flesh and Bone and Water was really different for me. I can’t quite put my finger on exactly while bit I liked it. I am glad I read it.

I had checked out I Liked my Life from the library a while back and never read it. This time, I was in the mood for it. I knew it would be light which is sort of was but it also was sad and heavy in parts. I am not sure if there’s meant to be a twist toward the end (which i totally guessed) but it was not an important part of the plot for me. I still liked the book.

The Ninth Hour was a slog to get through. I really don’t know why I continued to read it. It made me so very sad. She’s an amazing writer, yes, but I just can’t read these types of stories anymore.

Since We Fell had also been on my pile before but I’d not managed to read it. The only other Lehane I read was Mystic River which I really loved. I am not a huge mystery fan but Lehane does an incredible job of character development and this book was no exception. I think it wasn’t as good as Mystic River but I still liked it.

New People was also one I’d checked out before and felt uncompelled to read. This time I finished it pretty quickly and actually liked bits of it mostly because it was really interesting to read about characters so wildly different than I am. I also really loved the ending.

Nothing absolutely amazing this week but I have some great ones on my pile that I am really excited to read.

Books I Read This Week 2017 – 40

I am slowly catching up to the rest of my life. I am also trying to rest along the way. I have too many books checked out so I am trying to prioritize the ones I want to read over the ones that can wait.

Dinner at the Center of the Earth was different than books I usually read. I thought of putting it down several times but didn’t. I am glad I read it to the end.

I then moved to The How of Happiness which was practical and data oriented. It’s a book i’d like to be able to go back to again and again. a book I’d like to write in the margins of. This was just my first pass.

Braving the Wilderness was at the top of my list the moment it came out and I tried to wait patiently until it was next in my queue. I read it in one breath which means I will need to read it 5-6 more times. Brene’s books are always always always full of gold.

Little Fires Everywhere was also at the very top of my list because I loved her previous book. Even though I still think that one was better, I really loved this book, too. Celeste Ng’s ability to write about people and their inner worlds and the impact of our lost dreams/pieces on others around us is really beautiful.

My pile is still 35 thick from the library so I’m slowing wading my way through it.

Books I Read This Week 2017 – 39

This was a very low reading week. My sister has been here so I’ve been spending my time with her instead of reading. I will catch up when she leaves.

A Life of Adventure and Delight was a quick read but it was also a lot of sad stories.

I then moved to It’s Not Yet Dark which was even sadder.

George and Lizzie was lovely at parts, but I wasn’t a huge fan of Lizzie the whole way through. I kept at it however so I think that must mean it was okay 🙂

I have two that I am about halfway through at this point and I have 36 books checked out from the library. Here’s to hoping I get some more done this week.

Books I Read This Week 2017 – 38

I had checked out Would Everybody Please Stop last time but didn’t make it all the way through. This time I finished it and while parts of it were funny, I wasn’t a huge fan overall.

I then moved to  Stay with Me which I loved. I loved. It was hard to read and made me sad in many parts but I loved reading it.

The Child was a quick read, and I will say that I didn’t guess the twist at the end at all. Partly because I read it in bits and pieces and maybe I wasn’t paying close enough attention.

I am now reading 13 Things Mentally Strong People Don’t Do which is interesting and thought provoking at parts but I am not sure it’s super considerably better than the TED talk + the article. We’ll see.

Books I Read This Week 2017 – 37

I read the Class Mom pretty quickly. It was funny but it was also trying too hard to be funny in my opinion. It was ok but it will be a book I will forget pretty quickly.

I then moved to  Reincarnation Blues  which was unusual and interesting and I am still not sure if I like it or not.

Almost Missed You was a quick read, too, and also not super interesting. It was okay but meh.

I then read Home Fire which was interesting even though it was hard to read. I liked it and I liked the characters, the story and I am glad I read it.

I am now reading Stress-Proof which has a lot of facts but also a lot of “this may help…” which makes me think a lot of this book is still theories and not proven anything but still interesting and worthwhile to read, for me.

Books I Read This Week 2017 – 36

I read the The Marriage Pact in one breath. Very fast paced, unbelievable but still kept me on my toes. I also liked the ending. There were some interesting thoughts on marriage in the book, too.

I then moved to The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl which was quick and easy read but not great. Not as great as some of the others I read this year. Like Luvie’s one.

Of Mess and Moxie was 200th book of 2017 for me. Jen Hatmaker is awesome, this book is awesome, I loved it.

I then read Amanda Wakes Up which was an easy, fun read about politics and media.

I am now reading The Locals and enjoying it so far. It’s not 100% engaging but I like the characters and I like the storytelling so far.

Books I Read This Week 2017 – 35

I read the Impossible Views of the World as we traveled and it was interesting but not amazing. Meh.

I then moved to The Breakdown  which I read in one breath. It was not as predictable for me. I liked it even though it’s not a genre I enjoy all that much.

I then moved to Our Chemical Hearts which was wonderful. I loved it and it was exactly what I needed at that moment in time.

I moved on to some Pema Chodron with Perfect Just As You Are which I didn’t give as much attention to as it deserved. but it was still amazing.

I then read Joy Diet in one breath too. I really enjoyed it and am still thinking about it.

I am now reading The Driver which is also totally not my genre. But I am liking it even though I’d say it has about 65% of my attention.

Books I Read This Week 2017 – 34

I read the Epiphany Machine in one sitting. It was a weird premise and I wasn’t sure what I was going to think about it, but I liked it.

I then jumped to the very short Hunch  which I also read in one sitting. It was thought provoking and as short as I’d like my nonfiction to be :).

I then moved to Becoming Wise which was delightful. Like a dessert to be savored. I have two more chapters left here but I wanted to slow down so I moved to another book.

I am now reading Readymade Thief which I am really enjoying so far. I am scheduling this pretty early so we’ll see if I finish anything else in the meantime.

So grateful for books.

Books I Read This Week 2017 – 33

I started the week with Spirit Junkie which had some parts I liked but overall Gabrielle Bernstein doesn’t seem to be doing it for me. I can’t connect with her message.

I then jumped to the very short The Little Things  which was a bit better than meh but way too wordy for what he was saying. I agreed with his ideas, I just wish he had an editor.

I then read Rising Strong as a Spiritual Practice which I knew nothing about but I knew Brene would be worth it, and she so was! I didn’t want to put this one down at all. I wish she would come out with a book every month!

I then read Mrs. Fletcher which I knew I’d have mixed feelings about and I did. It had some interesting bits but also many bits I wasn’t crazy about.

I then read The Dying Game which was interesting, twisty and worthwhile. I really enjoyed it.

So grateful for books.

Books I Read This Week 2017 – 32

I started the week with Made For Love which I wasn’t sure about reading but once I started I found myself wanting to keep going. It was interesting in the end and I am glad I read it.

I then jumped to the very short Make Your Bed which was fantastic advice. I love books like this which are mostly really great graduation speeches. It wasn’t as profound as the David Foster Wallace one but that’s a diamond in the rough.

I then read The Turquoise Table which I knew nothing about but I loved. I wish I could do this in my neighborhood, too, but there’s so much holding me back here.

I then read Less which I kept wanting to put down but it said it was going to be super funny. It was okay but I didn’t ever connect to it much.

I then read Rabbit Cake which I’d been looking forward to for a while. It was nice but it also wasn’t amazing.

I am now reading After On which is a bit of a crazy ride, a bit too close to home but still an engaging read.

Here’s to more books next week!
