Books I Read This Week 2018 – 16

A lot of books this week, partly because I read some really good ones and partly because we did quite a bit of driving.

I knew I’d want to read Lisa Genova’s  Every Note Played  because her books are so good. And this wasn’t a disappointment. But I will say I didn’t love it as much as her previous books. Though I did really like it.

Census was weird, unusual, short and interesting. I am glad I read it.

The Broken Girls was not my type of book but I still read it in one breath. I was interesting. A weird hybrid of supernatural, thriller, mystery, and historical fiction.

I found out about I Stop Somewhere  through a goodreads reader I follow. I would have never picked this book up and I was incredibly painful to read. I thought of putting it down several times but I couldn’t tear myself away. I read the book in one gulp. It broke my heart and made me mad and made me weep inside my soul.

The Astonishing Color of After was also another amazing read. It was so magical and beautiful and heart wrenching. All at once. It was absolutely beautiful.

In Conclusion, Don’t Worry About It was a quick, fun, thought provoking read between books that were hard to read but wonderful. I really enjoyed this one and really loved what Lauren Graham said.

I Have Lost My Way is the new Gayle Forman book. She is one of my favorites so I knew I would love it and I did. A lot of YA this week. Unusual for me in 2018 but the ones this week were all exceptionally good.

Here’s to reading more fantastic books.

Books I Read This Week 2018 – 15

A small week this week, partly because I was busy at nights and didn’t get to read as much.

Chris Bohjalian hasn’t had anything I could read for a while so I was happy when The Flight Attendant came out. But alas I thought it was only okay. Not bad but also not fantastic.

Big Potential was good. I am not into business books as much as I probably should be but I really like Shawn Achor and this book didn’t disappoint.

I’ll Be Your Blue Sky was my light read of the week and I think I don’t have much patience for light reads anymore. It was ok but also not all that amazing.

Not the very best book week but it was still okay.

Books I Read This Week 2018 – 14

I started this week with Laura and Emma. I enjoyed it even though it didn’t leave much of an impression.

What Girls Are Made of was very good. I read it pretty much in one sitting. It was raw and I especially loved the author’s note in the end.

Girl, Wash Your Face: Stop Believing the Lies About Who You Are so You Can Become Who You Were Meant to Be was good. Parts of it annoyed me but overall I really liked it.

Nonviolent Communication: Create Your Life, Your Relationships, and Your World in Harmony was fantastic. I took a NVC class a while back at work and remembered it being really thought provoking and this audio reminded me why I loved it so much the last time.

The Little Prince was for Lit Club at my kids’ school. It had been a while since I read the whole book and I love love loved it. I love this book so much.

The Beauty That Remains was a quick read and I really liked it. It was what I needed this week, light but not light and sweet.

Annihilation was also super quick and I wanted to read it before we watched the movie. I didn’t see the movie yet so I have no idea if it’s good but the book was super confusing, I almost am not even sure how to summarize it but I still liked it.

On to book #75 for 2018.

Books I Read This Week 2018 – 13

I started this week with In Every Moment We are Alive. It was okay. It was sad but I somehow felt disconnected from it for most of it.

Speak No Evil was very good. I had not heard anything about it. I’ll be honest, I picked it up because of the cover. but it was really powerful and I am glad I read it.

Never Get Angry Again did not prove to be that useful to me. Mostly because I already knew about so much of what was in it. I am pretty sure I will get angry again.

Girls Burn Brighter was my favorite read of the week. So amazing. So so so sad but still a wonderful read.

Great at Work was a quick read I wanted to make sure to finish before it was due back at the library. It was okay and had a few good ideas that I will have to think about some more.

Two really good books makes this a good week.

Books I Read This Week 2018 – 12

I started this week with The Great Alone. I wasn’t sure I wanted to read it as I have mixed feelings about Kristin Hannah but in the end I loved it. It was a sweeping read and I read it so fast.

A Mango-Shaped Space was for Nathaniel since he’s reading it in his Lit Club. David had read it a few years ago and loved it and I loved it, too.

The Once and Future King was for my Lit Club with my middle schoolers. It was picked by my co-lead but I’ve wanted to read it forever so I was really excited. We only read the first book, The Sword in the Stone, and while I can’t say I hated it, I can say I really didn’t like it. It was just too absurd for me.

The Hazel Wood is for an upcoming YA Book Club meeting. I was thinking I would not like it, but I did. It’s an interesting and different read and not the genre I would usually like but I liked it 🙂

The One came after I picked up and put down five different books. It was a super fast read, and theoretically could have been so much more thoughtful than it was but it was still enjoyable.

Heart Talk was the last read of the week and it was so quick and lovely. I really really enjoyed it.

I’d say it was another okay week. I seem to be suffering for ideas on what to read so I would love suggestions if you have anything you absolutely loved.

Books I Read This Week 2018 – 11

I started with The Friend and while it was okay, I never fully got into it.

Next up was some Pema. I liked Fully Alive even though it didn’t have anything wildly new, I still can use a refresher regularly.

Animal Farm was a read for the kids’ school. I can’t remember if I’d ever read this or only saw the movie but either way it was a good read.

Surprise Me was a quick, fun read. Not one I will remember years from now but it was good for what I needed at the time.

Educated was the last read of the week. It was an interesting read but also quite disturbing. I am not sure I am glad I read it.

I’d say it was an okay week. I’m now on book #57 for this year. A few that I really loved so I’m grateful.

Books I Read This Week 2018 – 10

I started with The Gone World as we were driving back from our skiing trip. It was long but super interesting. Some of it was hard to keep track of but I really enjoyed it if unusual sci-fi is your style.

The Monk of Mokha was much more interesting than I thought it might be. I enjoyed the fast and easy pace of this book and I liked the story. I generally enjoy Eggers’ writing style.

I am, I am, I am was a tough but thought-provoking read. I liked it.

Brotopia was depressing. I wasn’t sure I wanted to read it. But it was fast paced and a quick read so I did. I am glad I read it. Still really depressing.

Books I Read This Week 2018 – 09

Some okay reading this week.

I started with I Found You which was okay. It wasn’t amazing but it was an enjoyable read and a pretty quick one.

An American Marriage was wonderful even though the content was so heart wrenching and difficult. It was a a great way to tackle a much-tackled topic in a creative and engaging way. I really enjoyed it.

Everything Happens for a Reason was a quick read and quite sad. I’ve read several such books at this point and this one wasn’t my favorite but I find them all worthwhile. It helps me stay centered and remember what matters most.

The Dangerous Art of Blending In was a Young Adult. My first in a while and I don’t know if it was that it has been a while or something else but I didn’t love this book. Really serious subject matter and content and yet I couldn’t get past how exceptionally terrible the mother is. I just couldn’t deal with it..

Self-Portrait with Boy was interesting. Different than a lot of other books I’ve read before which says a lot of course but this book dragged out a bit more than I would have liked. Otherwise, it was an interesting read.

Asymmetry was the last read of this week. It was also unusual and all the reviews talk about how clever it is. I’ll admit I listened to and read this while we were in the car so my attention was split and maybe I didn’t understand its smartness. I liked the stories okay but I didn’t get the deeper part of this book.

Books I Read This Week 2018 – 08

I read some of these books while I was traveling back from Sydney. The 14 hour flight lends itself to some wonderful reading, especially since I can’t sleep on airplanes. I only watched one movie in the roundtrip flight so that was almost 25 hours of reading time.

I’d intended to tackle You last year but never got to it and then I heard they’re making a movie of it this year soI wanted to read it first. But alas, it wasn’t the best use of my time. It was creepy and sad and didn’t redeem itself at any point. At least now I know that I won’t be watching the movie.

How to Stop Feeling Like Sh*t was a quick read that I skipped around in since not all the chapters were relevant to me. It’s one of those books I will likely refer back to but isn’t at the top of my list.

Faster Than Normal was interesting especially because I am married to a person with ADD and there was a section on how to work with that better. Having said that we’ve been together for 23 years so I think we’ve already done much of what he recommends. There were some valuable bits in here if you do have ADD, however.

The Wife was the next mystery of the year. I’ve read so many mysteries this year, far more than my usual share and I am definitely growing tired of them but this particular one was okay. It was considerably less irksome than some of the others I read and the twist didn’t bother me nearly as much as they usually do.

How to Stop Time was lovely. I am not sure I can even explain this book but it’s science fiction and literary fiction and maybe a tiny bit of mystery. I enjoyed how different it was.

Do Over had some valuable bits, especially as I am starting a new role (though not in a new company etc.) It was a quick read and I liked it.

Force of Nature was the best read of the week. I’ve read this author’s previous book last year and it was also very good. This is the kind of thriller/mystery I can get behind. With strong character development, wonderful atmosphere and solid writing.

Force of Nature is the 41st book I read this year. Here are some stats so far:

Thoughts:

  • Liked: 23
  • Loved: 8
  • Meh:9
  • Disliked: 1

Genre:

  • Nonfiction: 17
  • Fiction: 12
  • YA: 3
  • Mystery: 9
  • Middle: 2
  • Scifi: 1

Books I Read This Week 2018 – 07

A bunch more reading this week. Some great books.

In the Midst of Winter was my first abandon. I read 3/4ths of it but just couldn’t get into it and have read enough other books on immigration that I couldn’t get myself to finish this one.

Awakening your Ikigai was wonderful, I highlighted so many sections and will need to refer back to it again and again.

When was also great. some great lessons and food for thought. It’s not a long book but it’s full of gems.

How to be Everything was my favorite read of the week. I had this book checked out several times before I finally got to read it and it was written for me. Exactly for me. I am a multipotentialite as she likes to call it and it felt so wonderful to read about myself in a book!

The Last Mrs. Parrish was one I’d attempted before, too and I finally finished it. The twist was too similar to the one I read a few weeks ago (The Wife between us) and it was more poorly written. Some quite awful dialogue. So this is a meh.

Books I Read This Week 2018 – 06

Well, as expected, a lot of reading this week. I was on a long plane ride and have had a weekend day alone. Those help with the book reading 🙂

Still Life was in and out of my library queue quite a few times before I finally decided to tackle it. It was a well-written mystery.

Everything Here is Beautiful was lovely. Sad but lovely. About sisters and mental illness.

The Days When Birds Come Back wasn’t that great for me. I just couldn’t get into the story and felt Meh by the time I was done with it.

Call Me By Your Name was one of my very favorite movies of 2017 and as soon as the movie was over, I know I wanted to read it. Reading the book, they were pretty true to it in the movie. I loved it. I love this story.

So You Want to Talk about Race was educational, eye-opening and very worthwhile.

Advice Not Given was also worthwhile. This one will require thinking and rereading.

I read Gather the Daughters in one sitting. I had also checked this out of the library many many times and finally i decided to read it. It was so good that I gave up on audio and read the book during a 4-hour breakfast on my second day in Sydney. I didn’t get up until it was done.

The Immortalists was also good. I know this book got mixed reviews but I really liked it.

Grateful for several good books this week!

Books I Read This Week 2018 – 05

Not a lot of reading this week. Partly because my first book dragged on and i wouldn’t quit and partly because the other two were long.

Happiness for Humans was my first week of the week and it was just too long for what it was. Cute but just not enough.

Grist Mill Road was good. I liked the character development and I liked reading it. Fast and sort of mystery, sort of not. It was like Dennis Lehane books.

This Could Hurt was a fun read and also sweet and also smart. It was long but I am glad I read it.

I have travel coming this week so I imagine I will read a bunch then.
