what do you care what other people think?
I learned how to read well before kindergarten. I even remember the particular day. My sister, Yona, lay on my parent's bed, reading the newspaper. I was fascinated by the letters and wanted to know what they said. Starting with the large print headlines, my sister taught me how to read.

Since that day, I haven't stopped reading. I quickly went through all mainstream Turkish novels, moving on to the older literary pieces. I remember reading many of them with a Turkish-Ottoman dictionary since the language was so different. As soon as I learned English, I started reading most of the books in their original published languag e, since most of the ones in Turkey were American novels. I remember many days my amazing mother would drive me fe w hours out of the way to go to this one tiny bookstore that sold American teenage novels. We'd leave the place wi th twenty or thirty books at a time, with me grinning as if I'd won the lottery.

Although I didn't read much during college, The New York Public Library totally changed that once I moved into the city. Now, I read anything and everything. If I read about a book anywhere, I p ut it on hold. I sneak at people's books in the subway. I write down all the new titles and check them out. Since I'm not buying them, I'm much happier taking risks. The only books I don't read are horror, fantasy, and most kind s of science fiction.

A while back, I started writing excerpts from books I had read or was reading. All the entries from before Decembe r 2000 were originally part of my daily blog and I didn't convert them so they may be formatted slightly different ly.

Please do recommend new books. I am always thrilled to discover new authors.

The excerpts are in alphabetical order. Hope you like these excerpts. Enjoy!
