Books I Read This Week 2018 – 42

This was a good week.

I thought Make Time  was ok. It had a bunch of practical tips but there was nothing wildly new in it for me. It’s more things I know I should be doing.

I then read Fox 8 which was a short story. I really liked it even though it was a bit weird.

I then tackled  An Audience of One: Reclaiming Creativity for Its Own Sake  which also had nothing new in it. It was meh.

I was finally ready for a novel so I grabbed The Dream Daughter which completely surprised me and I really liked it. If you’ve read this author before, you might like this one, too.

I wanted to make sure to read Whiskey in a Teacup  before it was due at the library. It was fast but honestly, not super resonant for me. I still love and adore Reese though.

I finished the week with Dare to Lead which was the highlight of the week. I love love love Brene and this was no exception. I cannot recommend her enough.

Let’s see how I do next week.

Books I Read This Week 2018 – 41

This might be the week I read the fewest books in all of 2018 so far. It was a long week so I knew it was unlikely I would be able to read much but it’s still better than nothing.

I thought Charlotte Walsh Likes To Win  was ok. I wasn’t amazing but it didn’t make me upset as it has many others if you read the reviews on amazon.

I then read Wildcard which I knew would be an easy read and it was.

I started the  Muse of Nightmares  as soon as it came out. Laini Taylor is so so so talented. Her books are a joy to read and are unlike any other. And this was no exception.

Here’s to a much better reading week next week.

Books I Read This Week 2018 – 40

I had a so-so week.

I started with Dear Committee Members  which was funny and I laughed and laughed.

I then read The Line that Held Us which wasn’t the kind of book I’d normally have picked up at all but I liked it.

I thought the The Dinner List was sold as a lighter book than it actually was. I still liked it.

Fear was what you think it would be.

I needed some laughter after the Woodward book so I grabbed David Sedaris live at Carnegie Hall and laughed and laughed.

I was excited to then read The Mermaid and Mrs. Hancock but about 3/4ths of the way through I still was not a fan and decided to finally stop reading it.

I then bounced around many many books, finally settling on An Absolutely Remarkable Thing which was fabulous, fantastic and just the best! Both of these brothers are so talented.

Here’s to a good reading week next week.

Books I Read This Week 2018 – 39

this was a slow reading week but i like almost everything I read.

The Happiness Advantage was awesome. it’s a book i need to read several times.

I also really liked Before Happiness

I really really really loved Meet Me At the Museum so sweet and gentle and lovely.

The History of Jane Doe was okay, i’ve read too many books like this.

Josh and Hazel’s Guide to Not Dating  was ok. a bit more romancy than i like to read but it was light and fun and easy to read during this long week.

Sadie was dark, sad, and awesome. i really liked reading it.

Solid reading this week. Here’s to another good week.

Books I Read This Week 2018 – 38

I was away last weekend and took two days off this past week to be with people I love which meant less reading 🙂

Note to Self was super quick and lovely, of course.

I really liked Fruit of the Drunken Tree even though parts of it were very very sad.

I swallowed Vox in a day. It made me furious but I couldn’t put it down.

Like Never and Always was another super fast year. It was exactly what I wanted at that time.

I then started and stopped 5 different books. Finally settling on Dear Madam President which was a quick and good read for me.

I had a few good books this week so I am calling it a success.

Books I Read This Week 2018 – 37

A bunch of reading this week.

Sweet Little Lies was okay. It didn’t blow me away but I was interested enough to keep going.

Where the Crawdads Sing might be my new favorite of 2018 so far. I love love loved this book.

I kept wanting to put down Inappropriation because it just didn’t feel like my type of novel but i kept going because the satire was so over the top.

Nothing Good Can Come from This was okay in some parts and meh in others. I’ve never been a drinker so maybe this is more about me and not the author.

I’d put off A Place for Us  several times so I finally tackled it and it was decidedly a meh.

Then I picked up  The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo  which I also had put off forever. It was much better than I’d expected but too long imho.

I can’t say it was a bad week because I read one of my favorite 2018 books this week! 🙂

Books I Read This Week 2018 – 36

A bunch of reading this week.

The Last Watchman of Old Cairo was not bad but it didn’t grip me and I just don’t always have the patience for historical novels so they have to be really good for me to like them.

I knew The Shortest Way Home would be a super light and easy read and it was okay but I don’t have the patience for those either especially since I can tell you exactly how they will end at this point, having read so many many books.

I put off reading The House of Broken Angels quite a few times but I finally buckled down and read it and I am glad I did. It was interesting and funny at times, and pithy and sad at other times.

His Favorites was a super short read and really sad for me in how matter-of-factly this terrible story was told. Because it was all how things worked I guess, but it’s still pretty sad.

The next book was going to be my 200th so I decided to read something I knew I would love. I’d read  The Tao of Pooh  many many years ago and I knew I’d love it so I spent a night rereading it.

Then I picked up Unhinged which didn’t turn out to be as badly written as I thought it would be. It wasn’t life changing or anything. I am not sad I read it but it wasn’t the very best use of my time.

I then moved on to Snap  which is a Man Booker long listed mystery. It wasn’t awful. I like when mysteries focus on character and not just plot and this one did but it also wasn’t fantastic.

Net net it was a so-so week. I am so looking forward to October (I know we’re just barely in September.) because it’s going to be an awesome book month. Murakami, Brene, and Lamott together in one month!

Books I Read This Week 2018 – 35

Less reading this week.

Now My Heart Is Full was lovely and touching but not super amazing.

I didn’t like From the Corner of the Oval as much as i’d hoped i would. Too meh for me.

How to Build a Girl was even more meh for me. This book gets such great reviews so it must just be me.

Three Things About Elsie dragged for me. It took me forever and ever to read it. I didn’t connect with it at all.

Just when I was about to give up on all books, I picked up I’m Not Missing which I swallowed up in a single day and really liked. Saved the whole week for me.

Net net it was a meh week. Here’s to a good one!

Books I Read This Week 2018 – 34

I read a lot this week. It wasn’t intentional. I read four books over the weekend and then several shorter books over the week.

Eat Cake. Be Brave was wonderful and very much recommended if that type of book is your style.

I also really enjoyed, On Color. I read a book a long time ago on a single color and really liked it so I knew i was going to like this and it didn’t disappoint.

Notes from a Public Typewriter was  a random grab because of Stephanie Howell mentioning it on her instagram. It was a super fast read and super amazing. Touching, sweet, and just all around lovely.

Switchers was also really good, especially if you’re interested in switching careers. It was tangible, actionable and full of good information.

I liked America for Beginners which meandered a bit but then was thoughtful towards the end.

The Bookshop was a super quick read and it’s being made into a move so I had to read it. It was…not sure how to put it. It was different. More like a short story.

The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work was also actionable, specific and I really liked reading it. I posted about this on my instagram that I love reading books on marriage especially when things are going well in my marriage.

Convenience Store Woman was a super quick read and unusual and different and also like a long short story. I actually liked it.

The Incendiaries didn’t connect with me at all. It was fast so I read it but it wasn’t a good use of time for me.

Net net it was a good week. Here’s to another good one!

Books I Read This Week 2018 – 33

This was the week of super long reads. With the exception of one, all the books I read where 13+ hours of audio.

Spinning Silver was an amazing read!! I resisted reading it, I even hated the cover. It’s rare that I will pick up a fantasy but I love love loved this book.

I checked out A Conjuring of Light  from the library like eight times. I read and liked the other two books and this one was no exception. I really enjoyed this series.

A Gentleman in Moscow was another one that I checked out a bazillion times so I am glad I finally managed to finish it. In the end I am not sure it was my cup of tea. It was funny and sweet and interesting at bits but not amazing enough to be worthwhile the time investment for me.

The Three Questions was meh. I need to read it again I think to really sit with it.

I am almost done with The Death of Mrs. Westaway and I am glad I read it. I don’t think I’ve gotten to the big twist yet since I know Ruth Ware likes them and she’s woven a windy tale. But I have about an hour left so it’s coming soon.

Not sure what I’ll tackle next, let’s see.

Books I Read This Week 2018 – 32

And okay array of books this week.

Ghosted was lovely and I enjoyed it but I’ve read a lot of books like this by now so it didn’t really stand out for me.

Your Second Life Begins When You Realize You Only Have One, was trying to be a semi-clever way to hide advice and howto book into a novel style. I think if these ideas weren’t already content I knew, it would have been a more lovely book for me but as it was, it was okay but not whoa!

Dear Mrs. Bird was my favorite read of this week. I enjoyed the story and the characters and the writing. I understand that it might not be accurate as a historical novel but i still liked it.

Every Time You Go Away was eh. Not the best use of my time.

The Sparsholt Affair was my long read of the week. It was ok but I have to say that I just never really connected with it so I am not sure it was worth all the time I invested into it. I thought it would be like The Heart’s Invisible Furies but it’s not proving to be the case so far.

I don’t have a pile i’m super excited about at this point, so I’d love recommendations if you have any. Especially of books you loved and/or couldn’t put down.

Books I Read This Week 2018 – 31

And okay array of books this week.

Can’t Help Myself was different, interesting and enjoyable for me.

My friend Evelyn’s new book, Circle of Shadows, is not out yet but I got to read a proof and it was awesome. She’s such a talented writer.

And Ocean of Minutes was interesting premise-wide but I can’t say I absolutely loved it.

The Widower’s notebook was wonderful for me. It was sad but also wonderful.

What We were Promised was an interesting read and I really liked parts of it. It had sort of a twist/secret that I didn’t guess at all and didn’t bother me. But overall I can’t say I love love loved it either.

The Suicide Club was also okay. Another one with an interesting premise but I wasn’t super crazy about the novel itself.

Not as good a week as last week.
