Books I Read This Week 2018 – 53

I wanted to make sure to document all the books I read in 2018 separately so this post is basically all I read before January 1. This way, the next post will start with 2019.

I liked Diane Setterfiled so I knew I would like Once Upon a River which definitely did. It’s a magical story that moves slowly but is beautiful.

Lovingkindness  was fantastic because it’s Sharon Salzberg and I definitely need more of her in my life.

Intercepted  was fun. I put it off a few times but finally I was in the mood for it and it didn’t disappoint for what I thought it would be.

American Like Me was a fantastic read. I am not American so I connected with so many of the stories even though I look like I am American.

I didn’t really like  Love and Luck all that much. Maybe it was timing and I just wasn’t in the mood for it.

I had started Why Smart Kids Worry  a little while ago but hadn’t finished it before it was due back at the library so when I got it again, I started it again right away. Most of it wasn’t useful, some of it I vehemently disagreed with and then there were a few bits that were useful. I am generally very anti parenting books that claim to know exactly what you should do (or not do) with your kids. Life is never that clear and advice shouldn’t be either imho.

I had the previous book to  You Are a Badass Every day  but I couldn’t get myself to read it and after several attempts I decided to just read this. It was ok but just nothing new.

The Bookshop of Yesterdays was a lovely, quick read. It was interesting but not life changing.

This year I discovered that many Japanese writers write unusual stories that I really like to read and  The Lonesome Bodybuilder was no exception. I really enjoyed these very eccentric stories.

I loved  The Great Believers. I am not sure why I put it off as long as I did. It was a really good read.

Love for Imperfect Things was okay. Simple, sound advice and a good reminder.

I knew  Five Feet Apart  would be a quick read but I still wanted to read it before the movie came out. It was okay.

Elevation was a super-pleasant last-minute surprise. As I was surfing other people’s 2018 reads, I saw this pop up and was curious. I love Stephen King as a writer but usually he writes horror and I don’t read horror. So when he writes anything but, I always make a point to read it. This was fantastic.

I then tackled another top mentioned for 2018:  You Think It, I’ll Say It. I don’t usually like short story collections but this was great. I liked each of the stories quite a bit.

I ended the year with  On the Same Page which was a very mediocre read but I forgive that since this week was filled with several fantastic reads.

And there we go, 323 books in 2018. Overall, a really good year that was filled with many books I loved. Here’s to hoping 2019 proves to be just as magical.

Books I Read this Week 2018 is a year-long project for 2018. You can read more about my projects for 2018 here.

For 2019 I plan to use a sheet to track my reading again and I am also tracking my books on goodreads. Here’s to another year of reading! I am planning to purposefully read 100 fewer books next year so I can use that time to take classes. Let’s see if I can be successful 🙂

Books I Read This Week 2018 – 52

I started the week with Severance which I’d been putting off for a long time, I liked it and I am glad I read it. Not sure if it would make my top ten in 2018 list though as it seems to have made for so many others.

The Museum of Modern Love  was fantastic. Different, touching, thoughtful. I loved it.

My Sister, The Serial Killer  is another one of those I see on every list and wasn’t sure if I would like it. It’s really short so I finally tackled it and it was interesting. Better than I thought it would be with that name.

Misadventures of a College Girl was little light reading for when I wasn’t feeling well. Not usually a genre I enjoy but this year I’ve been trying to read more widely.

I really enjoyed  Joyful and it will stay with me for a while. I also have been thinking about how to incorporate bits and pieces of it into my daily life.

How Will You Measure Your Life? was fantastic, thought provoking and another one that will stay with me for a while. Always good to read books like this to help remind me what matters most to me.

I knew  Congratulations, By the Way  was super short and I had heard bits of it before but it was worth every minute of listening to this short speech.

But  Harry’s Trees was by far the best read of the week and one of the most enjoyable books of this year for me. I really recommend it.

I ended the week with another super light read:  My Favorite Half-Night Stand. It was okay and light as expected.

A few more days of reading in 2018. Let’s see where I end up.

Books I Read This Week 2018 – 51

I started the week with Seventeen which I just could never get into. It wasn’t that it was bad, just that I never connected with the novel.

The Curse of the Boyfriend Sweater  was a similar experience too. I really enjoyed bits of it but overall it was meh.

I figured the  The Marriage Lie  was going to be engaging even though I wasn’t sure I was going to like it. In the end, I did. It was different than the other books in this gene.

Art Matters was a super fast read but wonderful and joyful and even though I am not a huge fan of Neil Gaiman’s books, I love his non fiction.

I enjoyed A Return to Love and it was exactly what I needed at that moment.

I also really really liked the stories in   The End of the End of the Earth which kept me company as I scrapbooked.

I like the way Louisa Hall writes and  Trinity was no exception. It wasn’t as good as her previous novel but I am still glad I read it.

I then tackled  Down and Across which I thought would be fun especially as I have been doing lots of crosswords. It was fun and okay but the crosswords didn’t actually show up as much as I had anticipated.

I had been waiting to read  Choose Wonder over Worry and it didn’t disappoint! I really enjoyed this new to me author.

I ended the week with  Things I Wish I Knew Before My Mom Died which I also was really looking forward to but it turned out to be what I thought. It wasn’t bad just different than my expectations which is always tricky.

All in all, ok week. I am on to my 300th book now.

Books I Read This Week 2018 – 50

I started the week A Heart in a Body in the World which my friend Amy recommended. It took me a while to get into the book but then I enjoyed it until the end when you find out what actually happened and it was such a departure from what I thought it was building up to that it really threw me off and then I got really upset.

The Feather Thief  had been on amazon’s best of list for a while and I kept staring at it and not reading it so I finally decided to tackle it this week and I am so glad I did. I enjoyed it quite a bit.

Seth’s books are always goos and   This Is Marketing  was no exception. I really enjoyed it.

Words on Bathroom Walls was a random pick that I thought would be good and even though I think it was good, I have read too many books like this so I didn’t love it as much as I would have had I read it in the beginning of this year.

I enjoyed  The Challenge Culture more than I thought I would have. I knew nothing about the author so that alone was fascinating to me.

I ended the week with  Thanks A Thousand  which was short and lovely and a good reminder that there is so much that goes into every simple thing in your life. It’s good to be mindful and think of all the pieces that have to come together for a simple thing like your morning coffee.

All in all, an ok week.

Books I Read This Week 2018 – 49

I started the week The 7 ½ Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle which is pretty much unlike anything I’ve read. I can’t really explain it but I did think it was worthwhile, if for nothing else, for how different it is.

Exactly What to Say  was a super fast read. it had some gems but it’s nothing amazing for my life.

I’d started Heretics Anonymous a few months ago and finally finished it. It was okay but not the best YA I’ve read.

I was looking forward to  The Surrender Experiment but in the end, I decided I didn’t like it. It was too much of a biography of singer and not enough abstraction of the concepts he was trying to explain, for me.

I love love loved  The Housekeeper and the Professor  It made me so happy. I feel like this year has been a big year for Japanese writers for me.

I then listened to the  Ram Dass Audio Collection  which was fantastic. I love Ram Dass.

All in all, a good week. I’m up to book number 286 for this year.

Books I Read This Week 2018 – 48

Big reading week this week. Partly due to some time off work and partly because several of these were short books.

I started with Can You Learn to be Lucky? which turned out to be quite interesting and full of data.

I then moved to A Call for Revolution which is wonderful.

The Good Luck Charm was meh. I am done with this genre for a while.

I moved to Success Through Diversity which was okay. I have read a bunch on this topic so not much here was new but I am still glad I read it.

I really enjoyed  The Bullet Journal Method  so much that I decided to finally start trying to use this method.

I then read  Never Split the Difference  which was fantastic. A lot of non-fiction this week. But this one was one of the best.

I then read  Dear Bob and Sue  which was lovely but I think it went on a bit longer than I wanted to. My attention waned by the end.

I then read  Gmorning, Gnight!  because it was a lovely and really short read. I love love loved it.

I ended the week on  Happiness  and a bit of Thich Nhat Hanh is always good for my soul.

All but one this week was non-fiction, I can’t remember the last time that happened!

Books I Read This Week 2018 – 47

Considering I had a lot of travel this week, I would have liked to read more but I read a few long books and I loved at least two so I am happy with the way this week turned out.

I started with All Your Perfects because Stephanie likes it so much and it was good but I think I’ve read too many like this lately so it was just okay for me.

I then moved to A River of Stars which I’d checked out of the library a bazillion times but I finally read it and it was pretty good.

The Optimist’s Guide to Letting Go was also so so. I need to take a break from the lighter books I think.

I moved to Family Trust which I heard was good. It was okay. Imho, it was too long and would have been just as good a book at half the length.

I was looking forward to A Ladder to the Sky all year. Boyne wrote one of my favorite novels so I couldn’t wait to read this one. Even though the main character is such an awful person I still loved reading this book. I love the storytelling. Boyne is amazing at capturing the essence of humans. He has wonderful characters and is an amazing storyteller.

I then read Someone Like Me because I’ve loved all of M.R. Carey’s previous novels but this one might have been my very favorite. So magical, so different, I loved it.

Here’s to another good week.

Books I Read This Week 2018 – 46

A reasonably good reading week. I am grateful for some good books this week.

I had never heard of The Disappearances which I just picked up thanks to the library and I really enjoyed this novel.

I then moved to Dear Evan Hansen which I wasn’t sure if I wanted to read or not. I never saw the play and haven’t really listened to the music but I really liked the book. Glad I read it.

Heavy was my next pick. It was really really good. And really sad. I am really glad I read it.

I moved to One Day in December which i picked up and put down a whole bunch of times. It was okay but I think I wasn’t in the mood for that type of book at that time so I wasn’t as excited about it.

I moved on to A Very Large Expanse of Sea not thinking I was going to like it but I ended up swallowing it up in 24 hours. I enjoyed it a lot.

I then read Radically Happy which was practical, thought-provoking and a really good read. One of those books I have to read and reread.

And I ended up the week with Brief Answers to the Big Questions which I will have to listen to 5-6 times before I understand any of it 🙂 I am still glad I read it. I am so glad amazing scientists like Hawking were willing to take the time to share their knowledge in ways laymen can parse.

Here’s to a good week.

Books I Read This Week 2018 – 45

This was not the best reading week. I am in a place where all books look mediocre to me so that’s not helping. Even though I have 60+ books checked out from the library, none of them are calling to me lately.

I started the week with Vengeful which was a sequel and I hadn’t even read the first one but V.E. Schwab is a great writer and I knew it would be well-written. And it was. It was very violent and I am not at a place where that sits well with me at the moment.

I then moved to Every Breath. I hadn’t read a Sparks book since The Notebook but I figured I would try. It was a mistake. I didn’t like it at all. So formulaic and so predictable. Ugh.

The Proposal was by same author as The Wedding Date which was fun so I figured this would be too and it was. Though not as much as the previous one.

I moved to Go Ask Ali because it looked like it was funny. And it was. But also made me cringe how she talked about some of the details of her daughter’s life in ways that would have made me cringe as a daughter.

I grabbed The Other Woman because it was the new Hello Sunshine pick and her last two picks where my favorite reads from 2017 and 2018. But alas, this was a miss. It drove me mad how the main character loved this man even though he treated her so poorly, I have absolutely no tolerance for it anymore. And the twist in the end made me roll my eyes. It all just made me mad.

Meh not the best reading week. Let’s hope this one is better!

Books I Read This Week 2018 – 44

This was a big reading week, mostly because I was home sick a bunch of the days and took the opportunity to read for an upcoming work event I am planning.

I started the week with Zero Sum Game which was interesting but not mind blowing and you had to suspend a lot of disbelief.

I then moved to Atomic Habits which was tangible, practical and useful.

The Emissary however was completely weird and I have no idea what I think of it.

I moved to Fight or Flight and I knew nothing about it. It was a romance with some steamy-ish scenes and it was predictable but also enjoyable to listen to.

Meltdown was one of the two books I read for the summit I plan to host in December. I loved it.

I moved to listen and read poems by Alice Walker in  Taking the Arrow Out of the Heart . Some of them were absolutely amazing.

I then read This Will Only Hurt a Little which I will be honest was a waste of my time. It was fun at parts but just not really worth my time in the end. Still I feel ok that I read it, I needed something light at that time.

I ended the week with  Unsafe Thinking which was also for the December summit. Another good read and as it turned out my 250th book for 2018.

I read a lot of non-fiction this week. But overall I’d call it a good week.

Books I Read This Week 2018 – 43

The best part of this week was getting to sit with Killing Commendatore. I am a big fan of Murakami. His books are always different in mind-blowing ways that no other writer can ever come close to and I just really like being lost in a Murakami-world even when I don’t like many of his specifics. This book was no exception. It was weird. And I really enjoyed reading it.

I then wanted something lighter and Not If See You First  was perfect. I read it super fast and really enjoyed it for what I wanted then.

I was still feeling a bit heavy and worn out and  Love and Other Words made me feel happier.

Which might be why I thought it was ok to read Broken Things which was dark and unpleasant. I read Lauren Oliver’s first book (If I Fall) and it was one of my favorite reads. I have read all her books since then (except for Replica) and disliked all of them so I think this is officially me giving up on Lauren Oliver.

The second best part of this week was Anne Lamott’s Almost Everything  coming out. I read it on Tuesday when it came out. It’s a fast read but it’s wonderful and healing and just everything I’ve come to expect from Lamott. I love her so.

I then read What if it’s Us. I was a fan of Simon and the Homo Sapiens Agenda and have read several Silvera books but alas this book was no better than mediocre. Just nothing to write home about.

I then picked up  Maeve in America  which I discovered from the library. I’d never heard of her but the essays were funny, thoughtful and I enjoyed listening to them.

Quite a good week considering I had two of my favorite authors in one week.
