Journey into Collage – Week 1

Well here we go. I’ve started working on this project but I still don’t know how I feel about it. Some weeks are going to end up more mixed media and less paper. Others…oh I have no idea. I am taking it one day at a time and doing whatever makes me happy. I don’t have any collage elements and I need to work on that. Anyhow, for now, I will share one page at a time and let’s see how this thing goes.

Here is the first page in my book:

The background of this one is just Tim’s tape and then the black circles on the bottom is a stamp. The other little ones are punched out of Margie’s papers with a little clock rubon from Maya Road. The big butterfly on the right is a chipboard one I covered with blue tissue tape. The rest is paint.

That’s it for this week. Not so much collage, I know….

Journey into Collage is a project for 2012. You can read more about it here.

I love this! It is different, it is collagy, but it is totally you. I love how you used Tim’s tape. Have to try it. I too want to get into collage. I guess I need to just do it and not worry if it is right or good. Maybe I will join you on your jouurney!

  • I love it! I have horrible luck with those Tim Holtz tapes, they never stick for me. I found your blog through Nathalie’s 2012 jump start. I love the video you did. I work a lot like that, the minutes of time I have between work, dinner, chores, etc. Even when I’m watching tv I have my journal and favorite pen in hand.

  • It’s beautiful! I think the beauty of it is in it’s simplicity. 🙂 I love the little “cluster” in the corner. “Yes you can!” Awesome. 🙂

I think this is beautiful! And I think it definitely counts as collage. Your work is really inspiring, Karen. Thanks!

  • Your video for JumpStart was great and I love this page.

  • I love this page too! I like the colors alot. When I think collage I think all sorts of stuff mixed together and over lapping. Maybe try using some ephemra….none the less it is a pretty page!!!

  • I loved your Jump Start video and love your blog even more. I have started to experiment with collage this year as well. I have written a little poetry and some short stories, and done some scrapbooking through the years but never had the courage to try putting paint, ink, paper pieces and my ideas down on a canvas. Now that I have I love it and, like you, the more I do it, the more I want to do it, the more the ideas come. I am challenging myself to start an art journal to allow myself more space to play, to try things that may not work, to experiment. Thank you for your words of encouragement and your inspirational blog.

  • Karen it was lovely, seeing you and listening to all you had to say…guess what i agree with you 100%..I too would love to drwa and paint better….and I agree we need to spend less time browsing the net, and more time just sitting down and getting started!!!just doodle or paint or mist..ect ect ect…as for the desk, join the club..I agree the more I see the more I use, and I also hate to live in a museum…my home is lived in and loved!!

  • Love this, the colours at the bottom stand out so well against the tape.

Found your blog via Jump Start and had to come over to say Thank You. I always feel my desk is messy and try to tell myself to be tidier but I’ve found I use things more if I can see them and I am more inspired to create if the things I create with are there to prompt and inspire me. Now I have good authority for it!

  • Karen,

Just watched your Jump Start video (wasn’t able to get to it yesterday). I’ve been visiting your blog for several months now and taking your Reclaiming Time class. I enjoy your thoughts and feelings on time and creativity as they (you) resonate more with me. As much as I love and glean from other scrapbook, art journal, and photography artists out there you seem more like me in a number of ways so I can relate to you.

I’m especially glad you focused on the two secrets. It was an Aha! moment for me when you discussed just starting. I had been trying to do something creative on a daily basis. Haven’t been successful every day, but I’ve done so much more when I drag out my art journal with the desire to do something. On the days that I physically handle my journal something gets done in it. The Aha! came with recognizing that the handling of the journal was the starting point for me. Now with that information I can apply it to other creative ventures I want to do more.

    Thanks,
    Linda

    Karen,
I just finished watching your JumpStart video and am so excited to get down to my studio to play! I’ve been giving myself permission to do just that, as often as I can, usually everyday. You are so right to say that you just have to sit there and have things out around you to touch and manipulate and use for your creativity. That’s how it works for me.

I also wanted to say that I finally installed Google CHROME in three of my computers yesterday and I am LOVING it! I can’t believe I waited this long to try it out. I love my GOOGLE. And that web browser is fantastic. I’m so proud of you and all you do.

I also read a few of your posts and am so impressed that I have signed up for your blogposts! Your post from when you got mad at David really touched me. I did almost the same thing to my son today! I feel so badly. He’ll be home from school soon, so I will be sure to give him a good hug (if he lets me–he’s now taller than me at 16.5 and driving himself!!!!)

Thanks for all you do Karen. I truly appreciate you!

  • I love you collage …it is so pretty.

    Hi Karen,
Just watched your Jump Start video and it was honest and amazingly helpful!! I know – two tips like that are sometimes just the thing. I guess it comes with time, that you figure out what the really important tips are to actually get yourself in the chair and making things (something we all seem to struggle with… ).

Well I’m glad I followed the link because I just saw this collage and it really sings to me – combines some of my favourite elements: printed words, butterflies and circles. Love!

Have a wonderful weekend. I’m away to the craft table 🙂

    Jen

  • Can I copy this? Must try this in my art journal!

  • Found your blog through Nat’s Jump Start. loved your video and your blog is delightful. I love your honest posts about life. It is messy and beautiful and scary to live. Thanks for sharing this. I will be back!

  • Katie

I too loved your JumpStart video. Your blog is awesome. You have a great way of telling stories that is SO fun to read/listen to. Thanks for sharing! I’ll be back as well… 🙂

  • hello, we have never met, but I just watched you ‘jump start’ – ha ha, you are NOT mad, the universe cannot talk to us until we do sit down and let it! your two tips are absolutely true, and your desk and supplies are very very tidy….

please could I see your mosque? – it looked so very beautiful and spoke loudly to me of peace.

Karen, I’m sooo thrilled about your collage, so excited and couldn’t wait to see it. Thank you for sharing the first page with us. I think it’s very much YOU and speaks loudly to me already. That tape you used is an awesome idea, and the circles/ gorgeous butterfly all of it is amazing and fun.

Please keep doing this and it will inspire me to start doing collages again also. I love it but have that fear of it being matchy/matchy but not going to worry anymore!!

If I had some tape like that this would be copied into my journal ASAP!! So instead I will do mine with strips of paper, thanks for inspiring me!!

I loved your Jump Start video and it was so you! Vulnerable, truthful and inspiring! Just like your art. You could be a creative motivational coach in your next life! Oh wait, you are one right now! I’ve followed your blog for a long long time and have seen/heard/felt you emerge as an artist in your own way. Thank you so much 🙂

  • What a pleasure to meet you this morning at the JumpStart site. I love the type of art you do here on your blog. I scrolled down and saw your “schedule” which brought to mind your comments in the video about your organizational style. I appreciated your two pointers in the video. Thank you for giving me permission to “not like” something in the artistic process without feeling artistically inadequate.

  • its LOVELY! dont worry about it being this or that or not the other. it is all good to do, because it keeps you in the practice. anyway its beautiful!!

  • Leslie Gardiner

Hi Karen, I thoroughly enjoyed your JumpStart video. You hit the nail on the head in my opinion. Appreciate your honesty and authenticity. Thanks. Also, I LOVE your 1st week art journal page!!!!! I like that you briefly explained your process with the particular page. That is extremely helpful. Leslie
