Journey into Collage – Week 6

Page six and I am still not anywhere near collage:

I had so many ideas for this page but it just wasn’t meant to be. The background is an actual map. Then I punched butterflies from the same map and glued them down. Then I tried to drip paint but it didn’t work the way I wanted to I just painted over the thing. But I’d already inked around the butterflies which is why the black ink spread a bit. I still like the way it turned out to be honest. Though not sure it qualifies as collage…

more next week. maybe then I can get more collage-y.

Journey into Collage is a project for 2012. You can read more about it here.

This might not have come out the way you’d imagined it, but the result is beautiful! I love the butterflies and the way the map lines show through the paint a bit. It makes me happy just to look at it. 🙂

  • It *is* beautiful- I see LOTS of elements of collage here. I see YOUR style emerging here. It’s just lovely!

What’s the definition of collage? Oh, here! a technique of composing a work of art by pasting on a single surface various materials not normally associated with one another, as newspaper clippings, parts of photographs, theater tickets, and fragments of an envelope. So, yes, this would be considered a collage. Besides, you as the artist like it. That’s all that counts.

  • I think it came out pretty darn cool! I like how the black blended in, too. We are always harder on ourselves when we judge the things we do.

Pave Your Own True Path. How true! Your page, your collage, just do what works for you. And it works beautifully by the way!

  • I think it’s a wonderful example of collage. There’s an official definition above, but I always think of a project as a collage if things are glued on (paper, fabric, buttons, anything). To me mixed media is anything created by only mark making tools like paint, markers, ink dribbles, etc. As soon as something gets glued on, it’s a collage. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it! 🙂 At any rate, love your vivid colors and the rows of butterflies makes a great composition.
