Us Right Now & Weekly Update – October 15

jake
This is going to come as a surprise but, yes, it was another week full of meetings for Jake. He’s been working hard and working a lot. This week was also doing the company taxes, moving the Roth accounts around and a bunch of paperwork in general. He also took both the cars in because one was due for maintenance and the other needed a recall fix. He’s been playing video games a bit which makes me happy. And he’s been helping out so much more with the kids and the house, too and I am so happy to have him around a bit more.

karen
A lot going on for me this week. I had a lot of work at work but felt like I was being productive and useful. I got my hair straightened and dyed again finally. I went out to a mom’s night out with David’s class and it was lovely. I also met a friend for coffee which was lovely, too. I finally bought a new pair of jeans and I am ready to clean up my closet of all the excess. This next week will be stressful, too but hopefully less busy.

david
David has a short week this week because he had no school on Friday. He’s been playing hockey during PE and recess lately and enjoying that. He also seems to be making friends at a good pace and still really liking his school. We went for his first teacher’s conference on Friday and everything we heard was great. He’s adjusting well socially and doing great academically. He’s above level on almost everything but still loves to learn and looks forward to going to school every day. I couldn’t ask for more.

nathaniel
Nathaniel is enjoying school very much, too. On days when he’s home, he’s bored more easily than he used to be and misses David a lot. He’s getting better and better at numbers and can count from one to ten (except six and seven which he can’t pronounce and likes to skip over.) He is still super-cute and mischievous. He loves sitting right next to me and leaning in to see what I am doing on the computer and eating peanuts with me.

Here are some of my favorite captured moments from this week:

I love how Nathaniel loves to sit on David:

I got to have a kiss during Sunday’s shoot:

Nathaniel really likes using this step lately. I think he likes being as tall as David:

He also sits on it to play.

He’s really into numbers a lot lately so this toy’s getting a lot of use:

And here’s my handsome boy:

Nathaniel loves this UFO, too especially cause it has a piece that lights up:

I love this shot of David, too:

The boys playing together (drawing together) while I was in a video conference meeting:

And one more from today’s tickle-time.

The boys are sleeping now and Jake and I are just winding down and relaxing. Here’s to another wonderful weekend.

jake
This was another busy week for Jake. He had client meetings and long proposals to work on. Trading, meetings, conferences. On and on. He also attempted the contact lenses a few more times but I think we’re pretty sure these lenses are not going to work for him. They make his eyes too dry so he needs to try another brand which we ordered and are now waiting to receive from the doctor. Let’s see if those work better.

karen
Things are still hectic for me but are quieting down a little bit more each week. I’ve spent most of the week doing the regular things on my schedule. I also scrapped a bit and went out to book club. I managed to take some down time and go to bed early almost every day this week. I sketched, journaled and art journaled daily. I also exercised of course. I’ll consider this week a success.

david
David had a good week at school. He did a lot of reading at school and at home this week. He’s been bringing a book home every night so he can read it to me. He made some new friends at school He got to play with legos. He helped me clean out the living room of all the crazy amount of toys. We all went to the farm this weekend and he rode a pony, rode the train, and played with the excavator. He also made numerous creations with his legos which are now officially all over the house, in every nook and cranny. It’s quite amusing actually.

nathaniel
Nathaniel is also doing great. He’s talking more each day. He loves it when we drop off David because he knows he’s next. On the days he’s home, he likes me to pay attention to him and plays right next to me while I work. He’s also a lot more talkative and likes to make sure he’s acknowledged so he will say the same thing endlessly until he can get a response. He loves tackling and chasing David all around the house and he loves to say all of our names again and again. He’ll say Mommy, Nay-nay, Daddy, Dee-dee. Many times a day.

Even though I stopped doing the daily updates, I’m still taking the daily photos and will share them weekly here so these posts will be long and full of photos, feel free to skip. Here are some of my favorite captured moments from this week:

Nathaniel watching the rain:

A smile for mommy:

The boys playing and running together into the room:

Nathaniel sits next to me with all of his legos while I work.

A smile to fill my heart:

And one from the little one:

and one more:

silly faces are never too far:

Sometimes, he also plays at his table wile I work:

Today we went to the farm for our yearly Halloween fun. We rode the train, David rode a pony:

Nathaniel’s asking Daddy what he wants him to do (he wanted Nathaniel to look at me and smile.)

My awesome boys:

Nathaniel loved feeding the goats, but the goats weren’t very hungry. we had to wait a long time for them to come and eat a bite.

David fed a few, too.

And then we got to go inside and pet them. I love how loving and gentle he is here.

And some more hugs.

We have a photo in this exact spot from last year with the three boys, too.

And on the way out David got to play with the excavator.

All in all it was a wonderful morning and we left before it was too crowded.

Now we’re all resting and enjoying the rest of the weekend. Hope you are all well, too!

Jake’s still ramping back up from being away. This week was several trips to the city and Berkeley and a few other meetings. I honestly don’t know how he can so consistently do that. I have a lot of respect for his persistence. As of last week, Jake’s started wearing contacts. It’s just a few hours a day and it’s been challenging but he’s been persistent and doing a fantastic job.

karen
I wish I could say this week wasn’t as hectic as the previous few but that was not the case. I still had a huge amount of work and on top of that it was performance review time so I also had to do a ton of those to do in the middle of everything else. And there even was an extra chaos on Friday. I did get some down time in the middle of all of this, which was nice. And today I get to celebrate my 365th day of consecutive exercise which is also very nice.

david
David had a great week. He had photo day so he was in full uniform. He had a playdate. He met his school family. He was happy for most of this week which made me very happy. He’s still enjoying his new school very much and making new friends. I am just grateful that he loves it there and looks forward to going to school. He’s also loving his legos and spending a lot of time with them.

nathaniel
Nathaniel is enjoying every moment of school as well. He gets really sad on Tuesdays and Thursday because he knows that he doesn’t get to go to school on those days. He gets sad when I go to pick him up. He really enjoys every minute of it. One of the teachers there has an especially close relationship with him and that makes me even happier. I just love that both my kids are loved and appreciated even when they are not with me. What else could I ask for?

Us Right Now – September 24

jake
This week was all about getting back to the groove of things for Jake. He came back from Vermont late Sunday night and spent the rest of the week catching up, returning emails, helping me, making appointments, etc. But I think he’s almost there. Getting back into the rhythm of the work and the schedules. Work, travel and school all came together to create a bit of temporary chaos but it will slowly go back to normal.

karen
It was another hectic week for me at work and home. I am almost in the groove of our new schedule and I have the 5:30am wake up time down. I am loving doing the exercise so early and getting it out of the way. I am loving journaling while the house is quiet and I am loving feeling like maybe I am finally finding a new routine. I still have a few kinks I need to work out but I am feeling more optimistic than before.

david
David had another good week at school. He had back to school night last week and the teachers seem to like him and we love his school. I feel very much at peace with having moved him and I am hoping he will enjoy his time there so much. His teachers seem truly wonderful and caring and dedicated and kind. He has been reading like a fiend and I love watching him dive deep into books and truly enjoy reading. It was certainly my very favorite thing at his age so I love seeing how much he appreciates it, too.

nathaniel
Nathaniel is also loving school and he also had back to school night last week. His school is tiny and he really enjoys being there. On the days he is not scheduled to go, he cries when he sees me pulling into the driveway instead of the school. He has begun using his name a lot so he’ll say Nei-nei eat or sleep or no. Closer and closer to making full sentences all the time. He’s so cute and jovial that it’s fun to be around him even as he gets more and more demanding and dramatic.

jake
This was a short but stressful week for Jake. He had a trip coming up on Thursday and he hadn’t been able to get a lot of work done the week before since he was home with me so he worked hard and tried to make sure all the little loose ends were tied up, clients were taken care of, etc., etc. But I think overall it was a good week for him and now he’s in Vermont with some wonderful childhood friends at a wedding. He also got to see his brother and a good friend in Boston so the week is ending well for him and hopefully he will be home safe and sound tomorrow because we all miss him a lot already.

karen
Another long week for me. Just working very hard and getting up really early to exercise and start my day before the kids wake up and the morning rush sets in. I feel like I almost got our new routine down. With Jake out of town towards the end of the week it was a little more stressful than usual but I managed to get it all done and still do my work and everything else. As I expected, we’re getting into the groove of the new routines and I expect by the end of September things will be considerably better. Or so I hope.

david
David is still enjoying school a lot. He loves the library and science and math. He does seem to have a few friends so far but no super-close friends. The good news is that he comes home happy every day and none of the deep sadness from last year is there just yet. I am hoping it stays this way and that he makes a few good friends and enjoys his new school thoroughly.

nathaniel
Nathaniel is loving school, too. He doesn’t even say goodbye when I drop him off and is very sad when he sees me come to pick him up. He’s become considerably more demanding but also super-cute so we all try to put up with him as much as we can because we all love him so very much.

jake
Jake had a ton of work this week but he put it all off to support me and help me and be there for me. I am so very grateful for him always but this week he was especially amazing. Above and beyond any normal person. He was kind, did anything I needed and did not complain one single time even though I made him ride with us to the school for no reason but because I felt I needed the company. He was so kind and generous and I hope that I can make it up to him. I know next week will be rough for him so I will try to be patient and supportive like he’s been with me.

karen
This was a long and tough week for me as I expected it to be. Work was busy, hectic, and stressful. Both kids have new schools, new schedules, and a lot of of organizing to do. I’ve been getting up at the crack of dawn just to make sure I do my exercise before the hustle and bustle of the day begins. Even with all that, I survived the week ok and I am feeling stronger about next week. I figure by the end of September I will be fully rolling with the new schedule and all will be ok again. Or so I hope.

david
David started his new school and even though he’s one of the only new kids in class, he seems to be doing a great job. He loves his school and his classes and he’s making friends. He’s been in a great mood and looking forward to going to school which makes me deeply grateful. I hope that this is the place he ends up making some solid friends for a long time.

nathaniel
Nathaniel is also started school this week and I was worried he’d have a hard time separating from us but he was a total champ. Adjusted immediately and didn’t shed one single tear. He loves his school and is always sad to see me come to pick him up. I really hope he continues to love it all year long.

Us Right Now – September 3

jake
Jake had a quieter week this week. Not too many meetings and a family day in the middle. He was still working a lot but it was nice to have him around a bit, too. It was so nice to have him and the kids all day at the golf course and hearing them laugh. He’s got a few rough weeks coming up and some travel, not to mention how much he’s going to have to help me in the next few weeks. I am hoping that after next week, September will go well for both of us.

karen
This week was not one of my favorites. I made two trips to work and I had a day off in between. But even with those, I was just feeling off. My jaw’s been in a great deal of pain and my moods are unpredictable and unpleasant. I wish there was something I could do to just turn it off and go back to a happier place but I think it’s somewhat due to the changing of seasons and I am hoping the new routines of September will settle soon enough and I will go back to my happy place.

david
David spent the week playing with his legos, watching movies, and just relaxing. I’ve been more lenient than usual this week because I knew it was his last week before school starts. He doesn’t appear to be anxious about going to a new school and having to make new friends. Maybe he hasn’t registered it yet. I am truly hoping that it works out for him and he makes some amazing friends.

nathaniel
Nathaniel is also starting school this week and, of course, he’s unaware of the whole thing as well. I am a lot more nervous about him since he’s never been without Jake or me. We’ll see how he responds to being left at school. I am hoping he’ll be excited to play with others and new toys and won’t mind not having me around for a few hours. We’ll see.

Us Right Now – August 27

jake
I think this week was a little more relaxing than usual for Jake but he was still running around, going from meeting to meeting and working pretty hard. It was nice to have him take a day off to spend it with us on Friday and I hope to do at least one more of those days before school starts the week after next. It’s always so nice to have Jake around more because he creates such an uplifting energy in all of us.

karen
This week was quite hectic for me. A lot of work at work but I still managed some wonderful art time and I am happy about that. I love all the art journaling I’ve been doing and I finally feel like I am completely into it. I’ve been thinking a bunch about September and the fall months and what our new routine will look like and what, if anything, I might want to add or change for the fall. I think my current plan is to let the season start and see what the new hours are like so I can figure out how and where all the things I want to do fit.

david
David had a relatively uneventful week. He’s been spending a lot of time playing with his legos and also playing a bit with Nathaniel. There are challenges to having him around all day but I really will miss his energy and help when he’s back at school. I really hope that he will love his new school and make some very good friends. He got a postcard from his new teacher today which made him and me so happy. I am really hoping that this year will be awesome and we will feel good about our decision to change schools.

nathaniel
Nathaniel is doing great. He is talking more and more and understanding almost anything. And he’s as cute as ever, of course. He’s always so happy (and sometimes full of drama) that he brings a lot of animation and joy into our days. It will be so very quiet with both of the kids gone the few hours on those three days. My bet is I won’t even know what to do with myself when it’s so super-quiet.

jake
This was a hectic week for Jake as it was his interns’ last week. It included several evening meetings, a day in San Francisco, several presentations and some new clients. All in all, a good week. He‘s been working quite a bit in the last few weeks and I think he will need some downtime soon or he might collapse. I have no idea how he can get by on such little sleep but he seems to do it again and again. I wish I could, too.

karen
This was a hectic week for me, too. Some serious work hours in preparation for the next milestone. I also did a lot of a art and a layout every single day this week. I am working on getting ahead of schedule while I can since I don’t know how hectic life will be in the next few weeks. I am still art journaling regularly and that’s making me happy. Early this week I was in a lot of pain but thankfully it seems to have subsided and I am going back to that peaceful place which makes me considerably happier.

david
David has a few more weeks before he goes back to school and we’re trying to get ready. He got a few more clothes for school this week and he’s been playing a lot. I do think he’s starting to get bored being at home so I think he will like the routine change of going to school again. I hope that he will really enjoy his new school and make some good friends. He’s already been invited to two birthday parties which is wonderful since he hasn’t met any of his classmates yet.

nathaniel
Nathaniel is going to start school soon, too. He’s not aware of course and I just hope hope hope that he is ok with it. Thankfully it’s very close by so I can be there quickly if there are any problems. I am just going to have faith that it’s going to work out. He’s been growing up and skipped his nap three times this week but I can tell he still needs it badly so we work on it and I read him stories until he agrees to lie down and get some rest.

Jake had a great week. Some important meetings and big potential possibilities. It’s amazing how resourceful and bold he can be. I am so awed by him and so proud of him. I pray every day that his business becomes exactly what he wishes it to be because I truly do not know anyone more deserving. This is truly his passion and he puts his all into it. He spent a day in Marin and one in Berkeley and a lot of time down here with the interns. He even worked at home one morning so I could go have breakfast at work. I love him so.

karen
It was a relatively uneventful week for me. I did a lot of work and some art journaling and sketching. I’ve made some changes in my food intake and routine. I read a book from start to finish. I took Christy’s Color Inspiration class and watched all of her videos while I exercised. I did a bunch of journaling (though not as much as I would have liked to.) and I spent time practicing multiplication tables with David and reading to him. We read a lovely book called The World According to Humphrey. All in all, a peaceful and wonderful week.

david
David has been playing with legos. I think they give him more joy than anything. Even more than the Wii or the computer. When he’s on the computer, he looks at galleries of what others have built with legos and gets ideas for his own creations. He’s doing excellent at the multiplication tables. He has also changed his handwriting so it’s super-tidy and really a joy to look at. His swimming and soccer are both improving. Last week we checked out a few books from the library and he’s already finished several including Alvin Ho. I love that boy madly.

nathaniel
Nathaniel is completely obsessed with a library book called Dig. He asks me to read it to him every time he goes for a nap or down for the night. It’s his very favorite thing. I read and he points at the photos and tells me the name of things. It’s one of my very favorite moments of the day. I might have to end up buying the book.

Us Right Now – July 30

jake
Jake had another relatively busy week at work. Several meetings but not that many night ones this time. He had a paper due for his tax class which is now over. His paper turned out quite good, in my opinion. It was well written and interesting. It’s amazing to me that he can do that in one day, at the last minute, whereas I take forever to write a well-sounding paragraph. He has always been good at writing papers.

karen
This was a very quiet, uneventful week for me. I’ve been working to take it easy and it’s been relaxing but also a bit unnerving. I think when I tend to relax, I overdo it and then cannot muster the motivation to do anything, which, in turn, depresses me and feeds into my bad mood. I need to find a good balance of working and resting, doing both with vigor and awareness. It’s an ongoing struggle for me. However, I am enjoying the summer days and not yet looking forward to the school craze.

david
David has been working and playing a lot. He’s spent a lot of time with his legos and books this week. I love to watch him play and I love to listen to him read. I am amazed at how well he can read. He is also riding his bike and doing well with both swimming and soccer. We’ve been practicing the multiplication tables during our daily walks and he’s doing extremely well with that, too. I love how emotional and loving and kind David is. He reminds me of me when I was his age and I am trying to remind myself to be very gentle with him.

nathaniel
Nathaniel is enjoying having David at home and the two of them build legos together. They also fill up the two trucks with toys and drive them around the house. Nathaniel picked a truck book for himself from the library this week and has been asking me to read it every single night. I love the little time we spend together right before bedtime and I know it will be a memory I will cherish long after he grows up.
