Daily Sketching – Week 38

Only three sketches from last week since we were gone early in the week:

I hadn’t intended to do miracles twice but alas it was a week of wonder and joy.

Daily Sketching is a weekly project for 2011. You can see a detailed post on my steps here.

A Book a Week – Songs for a Teenage Nomad

I picked up Songs for a Teenage Nomad randomly. I wanted something lighter and not dystopian. And this fit the bill. I read it quite quickly and enjoyed it. The writing style didn’t get in the way of the story and I liked the protagonist and enjoyed the story.

I also enjoyed the references to music, especially since it was the music of my time.

I’m afraid I don’t have a lot to say about this one but that I enjoyed it.

2012 Projects – Weekly Art Journal

Last year, I decided I wanted to art journal more. I’d been watching Donna’s Inspiration Wednesday videos and loving them. I had said, “I want to make this more of a regular practice in my life. I think it will go a long way in helping me expand my art.”

Here are few things I wanted to use art journaling for:
– explore new techniques
– try different mediums
– practice drawing
– play around with different color combinations

Well, as it worked out, I did A LOT of art journaling in 2011. I started with weeklong art journal pages inspired by Julie. I started that project on February 1 and created weeklong pages until October 31. Here are the three sets of images with the pages I created for that journal:

There is a lot of variety in the pages:

And a few vertical ones:

A few weeks after I started that journal, I grabbed a Moleskine sketchbook I had on hand and started to do more pages. Here are the two sets from that journal:

This was all about playing with different mediums and colors.

Then I bought a Strathmore Visual Journal and played with that. This journal was special to me because it’s when I started to find my own unique voice and started adding stitching.

Then I grabbed the Fabriano Roma papers that had been under my desk for almost three years and finally put them to use.

I love these pages because of their size and texture.

Knowing I preferred loose pages and not having to bind, I bought a Komtrak journal which allowed you to take the papers off and put them back on.

With this set I also tried to draw more, be more creative.

I also had some Fabriano Artistico papers that had been in my stash from last year so I also put those into good use.

I like the different size I cut these papers into. More playing with color and texture and stencils with this set.

And then I tried the last paper I had at home which was Canvas Paper. Not a huge fan of this texture but that’s ok. It was still worth a try.

I then decided to go back to the Roma paper which I loved (despite it’s terrible cost! ouch!) and decided to add my journal pages to my daily notebooks so for now the size is a bit restricted by the Moleskine but I am loving the regular art journal practice.

I’ve also started attempting to use handlettering on my pages since it’s something I want to work on and eventually plan to incorporate the sketching and drawing practice into the journals as well.

As you can see, this project was quite successful in 2011 and I have no doubt that I want to continue it for 2012. I now have six or seven art journal-specific boards in my pinterest and will continue to pin ideas I like.

I might also start doing different, bigger pieces again. But for now, I will just try to stick to whatever I feel like doing without stressing myself too much about branching out. I am sure things will evolve and change in 2012 as I keep creating pages and trying new mediums and incorporating lettering.

My goal is to make at least four pages a week. Three cheers for art journaling in 2012!

December Daily – Day Twenty-Four and Five

And here we are. I hadn’t decided if this book would go to Christmas Day or The 31st. But it turned out the decision was made for me since my book ran out of pages right on Christmas Day. I like the idea of going only until the 25th because it gives me that one week to rest before the new year starts.

So here’s Day 24. The front is our photobooth photos from Tintin and the movie tickets.

and the back was a photo so I just added a few photos of the kids opening their Christmas Eve presents and called it a day:

The next day was our Christmas Morning Breakfast as it’s become tradition for me to put this in the journal:

and the back was the very last page in my book so I put a few of my favorite shots from Christmas Day and made sure to end the book with my word to remember.

and that’s the end of this book. Here’s what it looks like all full:

Here’s the front:

and the back:

and there we go. Another year, another December Daily.

Here we come 2012!

December Daily – Day Twenty-Three

I’m almost done with my book. I just took photos of the last few pages. In the meantime, here’s day 23:

The front is just a shot of our tree with a little present ornament I received from Junelle that I love.

and the back is photos I snapped of Jake and David while we ate at the diner at the mall. They are blurry but they make me happy.

I only had a few pages left in my book so I decided to keep things simple for the last few days.

so that’s it for Day 23.

2012 Projects – Reading with David

Now that our A Book a Week with David project is over, I’ve been thinking about how to continue reading together for 2012.

Here are all the books we read in 2011:

  1. Winnie the Pooh
  2. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

  17. The Mystery of the Green Ghost
  18. The Secret Garden
  19. Encyclopedia Brown Boy Detective
  20. Katie Kazoo Anyone But Me
  21. Katie Kazoo Be Nice to Mice
  22. The Emerald Atlas
  23. Junie B. First Grader, Dumb Bunny
  24. Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle’s Magic
  25. Danny Dunn and the Homework Machine
  26. Charlotte’s Web
  27. Because of Winn-Dixie
  28. The Magician’s Elephant
  29. Stuart Little
  30. The Mystery of the Vanishing Treasure
  31. The Secret of Skeleton Island
  32. The City of Ember
  33. The Tilting House
  34. Harriet the Spy
  35. Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle’s Farm
  36. Babe, the Gallant Pig
  37. Much Ado About Aldo
  38. The World According to Humphrey

  43. Elmer and the Dragon
  44. The Dragons of Blueland
  45. The Mystery of the Fiery Eye
  46. The Mystery of the Silver Spider
  47. The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane
  48. Homer Price
  49. The Westing Game
  50. Frindle
  51. Sideways Stories from the Wayside School
  52. The Little House in the Big Woods

Instead of doing another 52 books this year, I decided we would focus on longer, more involved books. These books might take a month to read and that’s ok. The idea is for him to learn to stay connected to a story over a long period and to get a better feeling for the depth of experience a longer novel can provide.

Or so is my hope.

I picked a bunch of books that I thought were on the longer side and a few classics.
Here’s what I have so far:

  1. The Mysterious Benedict Society (and books 2, 3, 4 if he likes it)
  2. Little Women
  3. Black Beauty
  4. Bridge to Terabithia
  5. Peter Pan
  6. The Wind in the Willows
  7. The enchanted castle and five children and it
  8. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland

My goal is to incorporate our thoughts and feelings about each finished novel to David’s Book of Good Memories so we can have a record of our progress and continue to write down his thoughts on each book.

Like last year, I would love some more suggestions. David is almost 7 so any age-appropriate books for a 7-8 year old would be excellent. A huge thank you in advance!

Yey, can’t wait to start another year of reading!

Holiday Gift Card Holders

As part of Pink Paislee’s Winter Wonderland event, I made two sets of cards which are actually gift card holders:

These are super-simple. Here’s a single card holder:

and a double-card holder:

You can see a lot more at the Pink Paislee blog.

I will admit that though I never give gift cards for the holidays, I like making these.

Reading with David – The Little House in the Big Woods

David says:
I gave this story five stars because I liked that it was about a long time ago.

I liked the part where the two sisters each saved half of their cookie so baby Carrie could get some too and she ended up having a full cookie. And the part about Christmas where they got candy and presents. It was not good that she was too greedy and took too many pebbles and tore her pocket. I thought the part where the dad thought a tree stump looked like a bear was funny. So was the part where Laura tasted the snow to see if it was like sugar and it wasn’t. It was sad that they weren’t allowed to play or do anything fun on Sundays. I didn’t like the part where Charley was being naughty and ended up stung by all the yellow jackets.

But my favorite part was when the Daddy didn’t shoot the deer in the woods.

Reading a book a week with my six-year-old son David is a weekly project for 2011. You can read more about it here.

Us Right Now & Weekly Update – December 24

jake
After a lovely day at Legoland, Jake’s week started with having to drive 8+ hours to get us back home safely which he did wonderfully, as he always does. We listened to Steve Jobs’ biography on the way there and back. He had a few meetings on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday but I think his week was light overall. That meant more time home which was great. We spent the nights curling up and watching movies together.

karen
I really enjoyed my time at Legoland, too. My favorite part was the 3-d Bob the Builder movie. I remember the first time I ever saw 3-D and how amazing I thought it was. I still feel enchanted by it. I loved watching how happy the kids were and how much joy it gave them to be there. The drive back was long and painful and after another few stressful days at work, this week finally got quiet. The quiet is what I enjoy the most. For many people the holidays are hectic but not here. We relax, we play, we don’t cook or clean or have company. And to be honest, I wouldn’t have it any other way. I love the quiet magic and gratitude of this time of year.

david
David has the most fun of all of us at Legoland, of course. He made friends, he ate candy, he built legos, he went on rides, and even got to go home with some legos (thanks Mom!) He was wonderful on the long way home and has been great all week. He’s been playing wii, reading, building with his legos and really really looking forward to Christmas Day. Here’s to hoping it will bring him all the magic he wishes for.

nathaniel
Nathaniel really enjoyed Legoland, too. Way more than I thought he would. He built with his brother, looked at all the mini, moving cars, enjoyed the boats. He was perfect in the car ride both ways. He just looked out the window and sang to himself. He had one more day of school on Wednesday and now he’s out until Jan 9. He doesn’t really get Christmas yet but he definitely wants to open the packages under the tree already.

Here are some of my favorite captured moments from this very week. Again there are several repeats between these and my december daily posts of course. A lot of photos this week:

our hotel in Carlsbad was right next to a local airport. Early Sunday morning, Jake held Nathaniel up high so he could see the airplanes taking off.

a photo of the boys right outside the park. you can see david cannot wait to run in.

one of my favorite lego creations

nathaniel loved playing with these.

david with his favorite characters.

i loved that they had a place for the kids to play with legos while we waited in line for each ride.

most of the rides were david and daddy in one car and Nathaniel and me in the other.

towards the end of the day, we went into duploland so the boys could play. they had a lot of fun.

nathaniel went for the cars

and david for the cash register

he also loved the balcony.

at the end of a long, full day, we waited for the shuttle to come pick us up. Nathaniel is going through the bag to find his little truck book he asked for.

i love love love his light in this photo.

he loves any book that’s david’s.

david reading the Little House in the Big Woods, to me.

nathaniel and his lined up cars. He’s telling me to take a photo here.

the boys reading on wikipedia.

our home right now. the tree, the wii, the little boy’s blankie, my feet under the blankets as i rest and take photos. i love the everydayness of this photo.

my pile of books i’ve saved for the holidays. things i don’t read throughout the year but save for this quiet time.

my wonderful husband, relaxing and then falling asleep. which he does almost every time he stops working and relaxes.

little boy watching bob the builder movies on my computer.

and concentrating.

family shots from this morning. we did it before the movies so it was even darker than usual.

but i got my kisses.

and tickle time and that’s all I needed.

and then this morning we went to see Tintin and took some photos on the way out. Here we are at the booth: (I was trying to get Nathaniel to look at the camera and not the tv that shows us.)

And those are some of the moments from our week. Here’s to another lovely week!

December Daily – Day Twenty-Two

And we’re on to day twenty-two:

David reading out loud to me. I wrote the Little House on the Prairie but it was actually The Little House in the Big Woods. I love listening to him read to me.

i also love these little stickers. Put them all over my book this year.

another photo. added just a little my mind’s eye chipboard on there.

Nathaniel’s been lining things up a lot lately so I was compelled to capture it. I just love how cute he is. He loves when I photograph them.

and on the back is the little boy reading a catalog. I love the little feet that stick out.

and that’s it for Day 22.

Healthy For Life – Week 51

In all honesty I am not sure if I gained the full pound back or not. Since I moved to using the scale and not the Wii, it’s been hard to remember the number from week to week so I can’t tell exactly how much I’ve lost or gained. I can tell around where the number is and that’s really all that matters to me. This way I can keep tabs of any drastic changes and those are what matter.

With the exception of chocolate, holiday eating hasn’t really been an issue so far. I’m sticking to my regular routine for the most part and still try to east as much whole food as I can. I do think I need to work on more of a plan for next year but I’ll admit that I am not motivated at all. So I am just giving myself some time off and I will figure out what to do with the food in a week or so.

The exercise is still going. 2.2 miles a day. Especially hard on these cold, dark winter mornings. But I am keeping at it and I am very grateful for my treadmill which has been used every single day that I was home since I bought it. Actually since Mom bought it. Thank you, Mom.

and here’s this week’s card:
