SixBySix – Week 23

Before this week’s art here’s the important reminder: Please remember, this is personal and hand-made and thus imperfect. If you want perfect art, do not buy mine. Also one more reminder that these are pretty small. 5.5inches by 5.5inches. That’s about 14×14 centimeters). You will just get the original piece of watercolor paper with my art and signature in the back. No mounting, no frame. I don’t want to misrepresent anything. I will put a paypal button under each (you can pay with credit card or paypal.) the button doesn’t update so you will have to click through to see if it’s sold out. I will try to update them as quickly as I can and remove the button if it’s gone, but just in case. Each piece will be $35. That’s US dollars. If you have questions please leave a comment and I will reply as fast as I can.

With that here’s this week’s art:

it reads: always stop to listen to the quiet voices inside you. they will guide you.

sold, thank you

A Book a Week – City of Bones

I read City of Bones cause it’s also coming to the big screen and I knew I didn’t want to see it without having read it.

I read the whole thing pretty quickly and didn’t hate it but I also didn’t really feel compelled to pick up the sequels and read them. I am not sure what that says about the book but I also can’t say it was super-terrible.

so if the genre is up your alley, maybe it’s worth a try. (then again, if this genre is your cup of tea, you’ve prolly already read this one.)

Gratitude PostCards – Week 22

Here’s this week’s card:

It says: life is not about not falling down, the trick is to keep getting up.

This card uses a template from The Crafter’s Workshop (as well as a few others.) and acrylic paint.

2013 Sketching – Week 23

My goal for 2013 is to make three sketches a week. If I make more, great. If I don’t, that’s ok. Trying to keep the pressure low while still encouraging myself to draw.

Here are the ones for this week :

Weekly Diary – June 1 2013

Here are some snapshots from our week:

We went to a pick peaches and strawberries in Brentwood.

it was quite sunny.

but the boys loved it.

the little one spent some time being silly.

and making faces for me.

and finally a smile.

david took photos, of course.

strawberries were hard to pick.

but we persevered.

then it was Nathaniel’s last day at school so there was a party.

he got tattoos.

and spent fun time with play dough and daddy.

then it was photo time.

lots of laughter this time.

love these boys so much.

and here we go. so grateful for my life. i hope your week was lovely, too.

Not That

Years ago, I took this class. In one of the segments of the class, the teacher picked up two trashcans and put one in front of him and one behind him. The one behind him was full of papers and the other one was empty. He said something like (paraphrasing since it’s been many many years) “This full bucket is your past and this other one is your future. If you don’t make peace with your past and let it go, you are bound to take pieces of it and bring it to the future.” He picked up a paper and put it in the empty one to demonstrate it as the spoke.

Last night, as I was talking to a client, I remembered this little scene because we were discussing a case where the client was making a choice that wasn’t based on resonance but on what I call “not that.” (or maybe dissonance is a good word for it.)

There are so many times in our life where we experience something in a dissonant way and then choose future actions based on doing anything but that again. Imagine something your parents did that you believe is a mistake or something you didn’t like. You think When I have kids I will do “not that.” Or the way a boss treats you. Or a sibling, a friend, even a stranger. If something hurts, upsets, frustrates us or causes dissonance in some way, we react by choosing to do things that are pretty much anything but that particular act.

And while I am all for avoiding dissonance and pain, in my opinion, “not that” isn’t a good way to make choices in life. The most empowering choices come from a space of resonance. And the opposite of pain and dissonance is not always resonance. Imagine standing in the center of a circle at this moment and there are many, many paths extending from you to the edge of the circle. If we were to think of this one path you’re trying to not have and rule it out, there are still hundreds of others available to you. Picking any one of the leftovers isn’t the right strategy. While all of those would qualify as “not that” some are still dissonant in other ways and many are not resonant.

If you let go of your attachment to the past and to the idea of “not that,” you are now choosing from an empty space. A space of possibility. A space where you can honor your values, step into your life, and really exercise choice.

That’s the life I want for myself.

And now I can see why that means I have to empty my metaphorical trash of the past.

The Savor Project 2013 – Week 21

and here’s this week:

this week is all about our trip to the wonderful plants in Pacifica. I love these photos.
See you next week!

A Book a Week – The Silver Linings Playbook

I read The Silver Linings Playbook because I wanted to see the movie and I won’t see a movie without reading the book first.

In this case, it was super-easy cause the book is really short and I read the whole thing in one sitting. And I loved it.

In case you have seen the movie, it’s got some significant differences (as always) but I still liked both the book and the movie individually and think that this little book is creative, unusual, thought-provoking, well-written and has interesting characters.

For me, that’s a win-win!
