Reading with David – The Mystery of the Vanishing Treasure

David says:
I gave this story five stars because I thought it was interesting that they stopped criminals from stealing a valuable treasure and robbing a bank.

I didn’t like the villains were too smart and they weren’t caught. I thought it was creative of the midgets to hide the belt in the air conditioning! They also disguised themselves as Cub Scouts and gnomes. I couldn’t guess either of those.

My least favorite parts were the thieves robbing the bank and when they put Jupiter and Pete in the burlap sacks. My favorite part was when Jupiter figured out where the belt was and gave it back. I also liked the part where Hans threw Rawley in the water.

I also liked that because Jupiter found the belt Taro’s dad will now get to keep his job and not feel ashamed.

Reading a book a week with my six-year-old son David is a weekly project for 2011. You can read more about it here.

Daily Diary – July 23 2011

We had a quiet but lovely Saturday here. It started with sleeping in a bit and then exercise of course. Then family photos. Here’s a shot from when I was setting up.

Here the kids are negotiating for the remote.

some laughter.

an almost-perfect shot.

and tickle-time!

after that, David set up his legos in different settings and took photos of them.

and Nathaniel watched him of course.

then there was napping, art journaling, wii, and working. when Nathaniel woke up, we went out to lunch/dinner. And picked up David’s car that we’d painted last week.

I took the opportunity to capture those amazing eyes.

and the car turned out pretty cute, too.

Nathaniel went back to playing with his current-favorite toy. A fire truck we’d bought years ago from Costco (that David had broken long ago.) He loves to press the button that makes the “raising ladder” noise and lift up the ladder is the noise plays.

Between that toy and the two huge Tonka trucks, Nathaniel is super-happy. He’s playing with them right now as I type this and David’s enjoying his last moments of the Wii. Jake’s taking a quick nap in his office and I am watching Bones on the computer as I type. Life is so very wonderful when it’s simple like this. My plans to night are to art journal a bit, to help Jake with some work, journal (which i REALLY have been neglecting) and to read, of course.

Happy Saturday!

Three Things I’m Grateful For:
1. I am grateful for good books. I’ve been reading a lot lately and it makes me so happy.
2. I am grateful for the yummy goat cheese sandwich I eat when we go out.
3. I am grateful for our simple yet truly wonderful life. Others might think it’s boring but I am so content.

Three Things David’s Grateful For:
1. I am grateful that I played the Mario Party 8 game on the Wii * {his pick for the journal}
2. I am grateful that I got my ceramic car.
3. I am grateful that I played with my legos, setting them up and taking pictures of them.

Us Right Now – July 23

jake
A super-busy week for Jake as he had two day-long meetings this week and of course several other small ones. He’s now almost fully moved into his new office which is closer to the house. He also came home for lunch on Wednesday so I could go to work. His tax class is now over, as well, which means he gets Wednesday nights back (as soon as he’s done with the paper.) That’s about it for my awesome husband.

karen
A relatively uneventful week for me. I did a lot of work and even went to the office for a brief lunch to meet a new team member. I’ve managed to read three books this week mostly because they were all the “I can’t put it down” type. I also finished prepping all the leftover pages in my weeklong art journal. I need some time to get more organized which is something I’ve been putting off but other than that, and the journaling I’ve been neglecting to do, I feel relatively content.

david
David’s been waking up once or twice a night to go to the bathroom now and he’s doing great. He’s also working on learning the multiplication tables with me. He spends time doing his gratitudes and math daily and watches a lot of Pokemon movies. He’s also been playing with his legos a lot and has started setting up scenes with them so he can take pictures on the phone. We seem to need to “have a talk” daily but, in honesty, David’s a truly wonderful kid whom I am deeply grateful to have in my life.

nathaniel
Nathaniel is doing great. He’s playing with trains and trucks and cars and talking in almost-sentences. He understands almost everything I say and he also spends a lot of time telling me his opinions. When we put him down for his bedtime, he loves for me to read him a book and then looks through the book himself. He’s still sucking his thumb and using his blanket and loves to watch Thomas. We all love him so much.

Daily Diary – July 22 2011

And we’ve made it to the end of another week. Time is passing so so quickly, I am constantly flabbergasted at how quickly the days go by.

I didn’t snap as many photos as I’d like today. This morning the boys got to watch a movie and they were snuggled up on the couch together which was soooo cute..

Nathaniel is more and more obsessed with trucks. He says “truck truck” all day long.

and picks them up and takes them along with him everywhere.

and i did manage to get this stunning shot of my David. I love this boy so much.

David’s at soccer class with Daddy now and I am taking a quick break. Back to work for me. No plans for the weekend however which means a lot of resting and relaxing. Yey!!

Three Things I’m Grateful For:
1. I am grateful for the weekend.
2. I am grateful for good, fast-paced books that have been keeping me so happy lately.
3. I am grateful for the kindness and generosity of my family. I am so blessed and I really am focusing on remembering that more and more often.

Three Things David’s Grateful For:
1. I am grateful that I watched a lego movie * {his pick for the journal}
2. I am grateful that I played on the computer.
3. I am grateful that I had soccer class (and there was no one there but me!)

I want to give you hugs even when you drive me crazy

This is one of the projects I did for Pink Paislee for CHA Summer. It uses their brand new Nantucket line. This line is absolutely stunning!

Journaling Reads:
Little boy, there are many times in the day when you drive me absolutely crazy but i still love you so much and cannot resist the urge to scoop you in my arms and hug you all day long. I am just overwhelmed with gratitude and joy that you are in my life. i love you so so much.

Healthy For Life – Week 29

So I don’t think this week even qualifies as a weight loss since it’s so inconsequential that had I sneezed while the wii calculated, we might have gotten weight-gain. But alas, it’s better than seeing the opposite I suppose. I will admit that I am getting a bit fed up with not seeing progress, especially considerable progress.

I am doing all the same things I’ve been doing and I know I have to take things up a notch but I can’t seem to find the motivation/energy to do so. And yet, I am so not ready to give up on those last 10 pounds. I am annoyed at the amount of work I am doing without results. But I also know this is forever work and I will just keep doing it. I am pretty much on a routine now and I am not walking away from this.

Not ever.

Because I’ve already put in so much effort and time and sweat into this and I refuse to watch it unwind. I think this is more of a talking-to to myself than anything but sometimes that’s what I need so here we are. It’s week 29 and I am barely past the halfway point so we keep going!

and here’s this week’s card:

Healthy for Life is a weekly project for 2011. You can read more about it here.

Daily Diary – July 21 2011

I am in an inexplicable blah mood today so I will keep this short. My boy got to spend extra time on the computer today just cause I wanted to make him happy.

2. I am grateful that I am reading one of those books you just don’t want to put down.
3. I am grateful for my life which I am not appreciating today nearly as much as I should, so let this be a reminder karen!!

Big Picture Classes – Big Idea Festival 2011 – Giveaway

Many of you must know by now that I have been a teacher for Big Picture Classes for a long time. I am a big fan of Stacy and Kayce and Wendy and love the community there so very very much.

Another thing I love about BPC is that every August, they do a special class that’s completely free. I was a part of the summer special for the last two years and I am delighted to be a part of it again this year.

This year’s theme is “Words to Live By”. 12 of BPC’s instructors will be participating. Here’s a little blurb:

Each instructor will be giving you a word of the day, which we hope will inspire you, along with a downloadable template (in both printable and digital format) so that you can create a mini layout about that day’s word and how you applied it in your life. Finally, each teacher will leave you with an inspirational video message and a preview of the page they created with their word.

It’s now open for registration. You can register either by clicking here or the photo below. (Btw, I’m scheduled to share on August 23.)

While the workshop is completely free, the BPC ladies put together an exclusive kit for it as well. It’s completely optional but you can find the contents here.

BPC has generously decided to give away a kit to one of my blog readers. Here’s a photo of the kit:

So if you’d like the kit, just leave a comment here and I will announce a recipient on Tuesday the 26th.

Sounds good?

Daily Sketching – Week 15

Here are the sketches from this week.

Wednesday, I made these trees. Nothing like the original, of course.

the next day, we were out all day so I did this scene. a quickie:

Friday I did this girl with the camera. not the best but it turned out ok:

on Saturday I went to my favorite sketcher, andrea, with this sneaker. Mostly cause I’d never done that style before. It came out ok

on Sunday, I did this girl. I just can’t seem to get these right.

Monday was this cute elephant. I love the original.

Tuesday, I changed it up a bit and drew just with colored pencils. The original is considerably better, of course.

and here we are. as always some are ok others not so great. let’s see what next week brings.

Daily Diary – July 20 2011

I’m sorry to be boring but lately the days here seem to be pretty uneventful and I am just chugging along and so are the kids. I guess that’s playing catch up after two weeks of playtime.

Here’s David with his new Lego Alien spaceship. He loves loves loves it.

and on the computer.

with the little boy at his heels of course. telling him to play choo choo movies.

my little boy.

giving me a smile.

I love the funny, quirky smile that will soon disappear. I need to scrap this story.

All is ok here. Uneventful and the days are passing too quickly. I am barely keeping up but too tired to step back and assess. Working on it, though. Hope your week is going well.

Three Things I’m Grateful For:
1. I am grateful for a quick lunch trip to work.
2. I am grateful that I don’t have any deadlines or deliverables for another week or two. Just trying to get everything done ahead of time so I don’t stress during crunch time.
3. I am grateful for my mom and sister who gave me a call on Skype this morning and it was so wonderful to “see” them and chat with them. I miss and love them so.

Three Things David’s Grateful For:
1. I am grateful that I watched some Pokemon episodes * {his pick for the journal}
2. I am grateful that I played a game I like on the computer.
3. I am grateful that I played with my alien lego set.

Catalyst 133 – The Only Recipe you need is to fill your life with Love and Laughter

Catalyst One Hundred and Thirty-Three is: Do you have a favorite or important family recipe?

My thoughts:
I thought a lot about this catalyst. My first hunch was to make it on mousse chocolat or gateaux salami, both of which my grandmother made for me each time I came to visit. It was her way of showing me how much she loved me and how much she missed me. But as the weeks passed, I decided I wanted to make this one about my family and the recipe of laughter and joy that these family photos have brought to me. I don’t cook so I will not be leaving my two sons any recipes for them to continue to pass down. But if I can pass down the power of laughter and joy as my recipe for a fulfilled and happy life and family, I will consider it a success..

This layout uses the new Vintage Vogue line from Pink Paislee. Since it’s a brand new line, I thought it might be fun to show more details than usual.

A Book a Week – Being Jamie Baker

I have no idea why I decided to read Being Jamie Baker but I guess there was something that pulled me to it because as soon as I started it, I couldn’t put it down. I just wanted to read it. More and more of it. I found it at a time when I was struggling to pick my best read and it was exactly the fun, lighthearted read I was looking for. I’ve never heard of the author and I guess it’s her first.

All I can say is that I really enjoy it and I am glad I randomly picked it up.

Sometimes all you want is a fun read.
