Daily Diary – June 18 2011

A relatively quiet and slow day here. I started the day by exercising of course and then it was family photo time:

Nathaniel would not let go of his blanket no matter how much I tried.

But we still had a blast.

I tried to get a photo of David with the blue shirt but it ended up blurry.

then Nathaniel napped, Jake went to work, David played Wii and I did my sketching and journaling. When Nathaniel woke up we took a walk and David showed me all of his Pokemon cards. So when we got home we looked up some more information about each. Here he is reading on wikipedia:

then I started my art journal page and Jake got home so he went out with David and rode the bike a bit and then all three of them played soccer in the backyard.

the little one loves the ball:

so does the big one:

and then it was close to bedtime so we gave the kids dinner and a bath and gratitude journals etc and now we are going to do a little work for Jake. I didn’t do much outside my daily task list but that’s ok. I have some things to do this weekend but none of them are super, duper time sensitive. So, all in all, I’ll write this one down as a good day.

Three Things I’m Grateful For:
1. I am grateful that I ended up with a journal page I like, it took quite a few iterations to get there today.
2. I am grateful that I am almost done with my first Moleskine journal. The one I write my todos in and do my sketches in and write my journaling in. I already have the second one ready and it feels good to see it so full.
3. I am grateful that I have some fun TV to watch while I do art.

Three Things David’s Grateful For:
1. I am grateful I had some candy. {* his pick for the journal}
2. I am grateful that I played wii.
3. I am grateful that I learned all about Pokemon cards.

Us Right Now – June 18

jake
Jake had a busy but good week. He put a job call for interns last week and interviewed several for a few days. He finally settled on two that impressed him the most and put them to work. They’ve all been going to work early and keeping busy. We’ve also worked together a bunch this week. He has long lists of tasks and paperwork and documents to sign and clients to follow up with, all of which is a part of working for yourself. Coding, dealing with clients, managing interns, etc. When it’s your company, you do it all.

karen
This was ok for me. I had some jaw pain earlier in the week and I also had some rougher days but I also had some wonderful moments. I did a lot of art. Some sound soul searching thanks to Soul Restoration 2 and a lot of sketching portraits. Work was productive, as well. I pushed a dev channel late last week and started working on the next one. Since it’s officially summer now, I’m working on a plan to balance our new schedule so I can be productive and still spend quality time with both kids.

david
David finished Kindergarten last week. He had several events at school, brought back a bag full of art and projects and an excellent report card. I am so proud of him as he’s performing above grade level on almost everything and he’s also socially well-rounded and a pleasure to have in class according to the teacher’s notes. We do have some rough patches of course but he’s working on it and he’s done really well for his first real year of school.

nathaniel
Nathaniel has been spending a lot of time drawing at his table which is set right next to mine. He’s also making longer word combinations now like “big truck” and understanding so much more. He loves kicking balls around and hugging us all and stealing anything David leaves lying around, and he loves having David home.

Daily Diary – June 17 2011

Lovely day here today. We worked, played, bought new stuff, did art, and had good conversations. David spent some time outside, using his watercolor set.

And the little boy was very jealous.

then he gave up and looked through magazines where he found a commercial for the upcoming cars 2 movie.

Then I worked, Nathaniel napped, David played, then there was lunch, quick trip to the store, and more work and then some art and it was bath time for the little one.

I snapped a few more photos.

I love how the blue shirt reflects off of David’s eyes.

more superman!

he was super-hyper and super-happy.

and then they were off. I finished my layout and went up to read a book to Nathaniel and sat and talked to David for a while. And now I am trying to put the last touches of my night so I can sleep. I only managed 4 hours of sleep last night so I don’t think I can stay up much longer. I am very much looking forward to this relaxing weekend.

Three Things I’m Grateful For:
1. I am grateful that I finished another layout for CHA with some new beautiful product that had me playing with so much color.
2. I am grateful that I bought a lot of fun stuff for David today, I love making him happy.
3. I am grateful that it’s the weekend!

Three Things David’s Grateful For:
1. I am grateful I got some legos. {* his pick for the journal}
2. I am grateful that mommy got me a pokeman set.
3. I am grateful that I got a lego sticker book.

Truth Cards – Set 4

Here’s this week’s truth cards:

thirteenth card [inspiration]

and fourteenth card: [inspiration]

and fifteenth: [inspiration]

and here’s the: [inspiration]

that’s it for this week.

Truth cards are ATC-sized cards I am creating as part of my homework for Soul Restoration. You can read more about it here.

Healthy For Life – Week 24

Well I must admit that the food was actually not much better than most. I was grouchy late last week so I ended up eating more graham crackers and coffee than usual. I even ate a chocolate bar. But, alas, the Wii appears to think that didn’t affect my weight negatively. Who knows? I know it’s nor reliable but I am not complaining since last week was such a gain. It is what it is.

I’m still eating my salads and chicken. And for a brief moment this week I had decided not to have any more coffee but let’s just say that it didn’t last 24 hours. I am not even going to make excuses. Instead I will focus on making sure all the other food I consume is healthy and whole and nutritious to make up for my coffee time. I will also stop eating spoonfuls of peanut butter for my protein intake, there must be something healthier that I can eat instead.

Exercise is going ok. 3.12 miles a day still. Some days are exceptionally hard and others are not so bad. I have finally reached the blue zone in Nike+ and I am quite proud of that. I’ve been thinking about next year but decided it’s still far away so I won’t stress yet. I’ll focus on 2011.

and here’s this week’s card:

Daily Diary – June 16 2011

A much, much better day here today which involved some art:

I love how colorful and thick my moleskine is becoming, it makes me so happy to be doing so much art everyday. We took a walk, watched some TV, cuddled, laughed:

Here’s Nathaniel telling me to photograph David, too.

And then giving me a great smile:

and a laugh.

and one from the big brother:

and it involved hugs:

writing gratitude journal:

new goggles:

silliness:

and more silliness:

and a lot of work and a new dev channel push and reading together and a brief trip to the bank. Full, productive and lovely day. We started summer in the greatest way possible.

I am grateful.

Three Things I’m Grateful For:
1. I am grateful that I had no headache or jaw ache today.
2. I am grateful that I got solid work done and finished off some todo list items.
3. I am grateful that I slept in until 7:30 this morning. It was pure bliss.

Three Things David’s Grateful For:
1. I am grateful I didn’t have to use eyedrops. {* his pick for the journal}
2. I am grateful that I played on the computer.
3. I am grateful that next week is lego camp.

Daily Sketching – Week 10

Here are the sketches from this week. I drew a terrible portrait on Wednesday so I decided to challenge myself and draw only portraits for a little while. If the lack of variety bores you, I apologize in advance.

Here’s the original, amazing girl and my terrible version:

the next day, I did another girl. a little better this time:

Friday I did this girl.

on Saturday I made the stunning girl.

on Sunday, I drew this girl but just her face.

Monday, I drew this girl but in graphite:

and Tuesday I drew this girl. but again just the face:

and here we are. some are ok others not so great. likely i will do another week of portraits.

Daily Diary – June 15 2011

I could tell you about today and about having four shots on my head at the doctor’s (jaw pain) or losing Nathaniel’s blankie and the resulting screaming, meltdown, tears and then finally finding it hours later. Or I could tell you about the six Advils I’ve taken in the last few hours. Or the poop explosion we had during dinner time.

But I will just tell you that I spent some time watching the little one play.

Making sounds and being happy.

Which always puts me in a good mood.

And then going to pickup David from his bus on his very last day of kindergarten. Looking at his reportcard and seeing how well he’s doing academically and socially.

and how he’s such a goofball and sweetheart and a kindhearted little boy who’s learning his way through life and social interactions.

all of those were part of my day. The headache seems to continue as if Advils are nothing but candy. Alas, it will dissipate eventually. I am going to take it easy tonight and do some art and a lot of resting. I might even take the day off tomorrow if this head-pounding continues.

Three Things I’m Grateful For:
1. I am grateful that I found Nathaniel’s blanket. So, so grateful.
2. I am grateful that I got a few more items off my todo list despite the rough day.
3. I am grateful that my husband’s home tonight. I love him so much.

Three Things David’s Grateful For:
1. I am grateful I got some lego sets. {* his pick for the journal}
2. I am grateful that summer started!
3. I am grateful that I ate a lollipop.

Art Journaling – Moleskine Sketch – Week 2

Ok ready for more art journal pages?

This next page uses the Liquitex Ink! for a background and fabric on the foreground. I then added a little Watersoluble Oil Pastels on the edges and around the heart.

For this next one, I wanted to do something totally different so I colored my background with pan pastels then tore out a page from a magazine and adhered it down. Then I just had fun.

to go with the magazine theme, I also picked a bunch of words that spoke to me and adhered them to the edge of the other page.

I must say, I don’t love this but I do like the yellow and it was fun and different to make.

Later that day, I finally received my Inktense Pencils and wanted to give them a try so I created this page by drawing a tree and then using a circle template to create it. It’s all made with using the pencils plus two shades of green acrylics. I also added some chalk stamp on top with sequin waste and finally a little of the oil pastels mentioned above.

I love the way that one turned out.

This next one was an adventure. I first painted the page with pink pan pastels but then it didn’t work out the way I wanted and I added some blue paint which I liked even less. Then I painted all over that with yellow which made the background this mustardy color and green in bits. Which ended up being the perfect background for my page. This page was inspired by Melody Ross even though it doesn’t come near her amazing art. I wanted to use my chip art and this was my first time ever. I need a bunch more practice but I do love how it turned out.

mostly because I took a chance and kept at it until I found a happier place.

That same night I ended up working on a different page with a completely different look:

This one uses green paint mixed in with white for the background and then some pan pastels (which don’t like the paint) and oil pastels on the rest of the page. Pretty simple but I still love it. I know the “h” is sideways but I just left it, i like its quirkiness.

That’s the five I’ll share this week. More coming next week. Thank you for letting me share.

I am creating art journaling pages daily for June (and maybe longer). You can read more about it and the book I am using here.

Catalyst 132 – It Is Never About Meeting Halfway

Catalyst One Hundred and Thirty-Three is: What’s one lesson you would give a married couple?

Journaling Reads:
Many people I’ve met over the years have given me relationship and marriage advice but I think it too often depends on the dynamics of each couple. The one thing I’ve learned from my personal experience is that it’s never about 50/50. Sometimes one person needs more help or attention and sometimes it’s the other. you go with the flow and always give 100% without keeping score. If each of you do that, it’s a good path for happiness.

A Book a Week – Beastly

I read Beastly because I saw previews for the movie. I hadn’t realized it was a book so when I found out it was, I wanted to make sure to read it before I saw the movie. The book was simple, easy and nothing so deep but I still enjoyed reading it.

It was a super quick read and I could then see the movie peacefully.

Which I did. Quick, simple, nothing too surprising. But fun.

Sometimes that’s all you want in life.

Daily Diary – June 14 2011

Today was David’s last full day of school. He has one more day but a super-short one and then it’s summer. I spent the day doing a lot of work and the little boy played and got to watch a little TV. Here he is smiling at me while he watches.

And closer. The light was bad since it was behind him and not me.

I still love them somehow but not the light and colors.

David got to play with his friend for a brief period tonight before Jake got home but then he had to do his gratitudes quickly.

and give me a smile, of course.

and there we are. I have a bunch of odds and ends to get done tonight so I am trying to go through my todo list and make it to-done! he hee. I apologize for not replying back to comments so quickly. I promise I will get on top of them this week!

Three Things I’m Grateful For:
1. I am grateful that I quit coffee today. In the middle of the day. I hope I have the fortitude to make it.
2. I am grateful that I am flying through my todo list now and getting some of these burdensome todos off my list.
3. I am grateful that summer is here in one more day. No more getting up at 6am!

Three Things David’s Grateful For:
1. I am grateful I played with Ece. {* his pick for the journal}
2. I am grateful that Daddy got me a Wii game.
3. I am grateful that I had popsicles at school.
