Today Journaling is a Monthly Project for November 2016. All of the words belong to Melody Ross. These are a part of the Soul Comfort class in Brave Girls University, I cannot recommend it enough. Last time I took this course, I ended up doing a year-long project on this type of journaling. You can sign up here. (I teach there, too.) I read Bone Gap because it was picked by my Young Adult book club. I was’t sure about it when I read the blurb on Amazon.
But I was totally wrong.
This is one of the best Young Adult novels I’ve read in the last few years. I loved the characters. I loved the magical realism. I loved everything about this book. If you’re like me and are sick of all the dystopian YA I would recommend you give this one a try. It’s unusual so it might not be your cup of tea but it’s beautiful.
Btw, I listened to the audio and it was fantastic.

Halfway through October, I still had no idea for my November art. I was leaving for Sydney in a week and getting agitated that I had no ideas. As I went back to the original post I’d made at the very beginning of the year, I noticed that I had listed “today I know” as one the projects I wanted to this year and decided it was going to be my last project before December Daily.
As I sat to do them, I looked through my printouts from Soul Comfort and the “what…today” prompts resonated more with me so I decided to slightly change my course and do those instead. I really have been itching to journal lately so combining drawing/painting with journaling was a perfect call for November. If you haven’t taken Soul Comfort, I strongly recommend it. You can sign up here as part of Brave Girls University.

Nathaniel loves playdates. Loves. Loves. Loves.
He asks me everyday if he can have playdates. Every time with a new friend.
Unfortunately for him, I am not as much a fan of playdates as he is. So it’s tough for me to make them happen. A few weeks ago, we finally arranged a playdate for his friend Ethan and him. Three days before Ethan came, I woke up to this.
Nathaniel had arranged all of his toys and made a playing den for him and his friend. Pillows, pokemon toys, mindcraft toys, magnets, legos, on and on. He and his friend played in there for at least 2 of the 3 hour playdate.
He promised me he would clean it up when his friend left and within the hour it was gone.
This boy is the sweetest, kindest person I know. I will work harder to make more playdates happen!

- Weekly Intention: We are now on week 44 of this year. How did this happen? I am both ready and not ready for the year to be over. I usually take a lot of downtime during the holidays and I really hope I can do that this year, too. I need it even more than ever. Anyhow, back to this week. This week I have a trip to work, two to David’s school, one to Nathaniel’s school, and Halloween, of course. I am not a fan of Halloween. Not a fan of scary things. I much prefer Christmas. I have a medium size of work and personal work to do, but I know it will still be hard because I am very jetlagged and my spine is really hurting (likely from travel) so I will need a lot of rest. So I think I will make my intention to get a lot of rest while taking sprints of getting work done. I think that would make me happiest this week. I’ve been thinking a bit about 2017 plans too and would like to write stuff down this week. And to put my 2016 December Daily pre pages together. Let’s see how much of that gets done.
- Choices I want to make:
- One: I will choose to rest when I need it and get back to exercise.
- Two: I will choose to pace myself with books, and my personal todo list. It can all wait.
- Three: I will choose to start learning some of the statistics and metrics work I want to learn.
- I am looking forward to: David’s teacher conference this Friday.
- This week’s challenges: I think most of the challenges will be me. How tired I am. So I will try to block some sprint working time and then I will give myself grace to rest as much as possible. Here’s to hoping it works!!
- Top Goals:
- Work: Emails down to zero. One spreadsheet to make, one document to comment on and learning analytics. that’s my goal this week. Everything else is bonus.
- Personal: Get my 2017 plan, journal, rest, exercise, eat good food.
- Family: Hug kids. hug them more. be kind. be kinder.
- I will focus on my core desires (kind, strong, true, generous, brave) by:
- I will be kind to myself. Give myself grace to recover.
- I will be strong and ask for what I want/need.
- I will be generous with my kindness. I want to try to be as kind as possible.
- I will be true to my priorities and remember that things are less urgent than they seem.
- I will be brave and give myself what I need. I am often scared to take a break but i really need it.
- This week, I want to remember: that my life is so full and so layered and it’s exactly how I want it to be. I designed it and I love all aspects of it. Sometimes I feel like I am the victim of my life but to be honest, I chose everything in my life and I wouldn’t want to give any of it up. So I just need to check in with myself and see if I still would choose a particular thing that seems to feel overwhelming at the moment. Remember to give myself grace. Remember that I can make different choices if that’s what I’d like. And I want to remember that life is a marathon and not a sprint. I want to savor the journey. To be present for the journey. I am so grateful for my journey.
Here’s to a wonderful week!
Another month is over. Good-bye October. Thank you for all the wonderful days.
Here are all the cards:

Onward to November.
Truth Cards is a Monthly Project for October 2016. All of the words belong to Melody Ross. These are a part of the Soul Restoration class in Brave Girls University, I cannot recommend it enough. Here are some thoughts from when I first took it. It’s even better now because Melody added so much more! You can sign up here. (I teach there, too.) - Three Choices I made this week:
- One: I chose to work a lot while I was in Sydney as much as I could. And I also chose to socialize even when I was tired.
- Two: I chose to go to the beach in the middle of one of my days to ensure I didn’t spend the week there without seeing the sculptures by the sea.
- Three: I chose to take David to his first middle school dance the same night I got back from Sydney. Jetlagged, exhausted, and still there. I am so glad I was.
- I read/learned: I finished A Darker Shade of Magic, Nutshell and Creative Schools this week. I am now reading Ophelia and the Marvelous Boy and Tuesday Nights in 1980. I have 18 audiobooks checked out of three libraries at this moment and I wish I could read them all simultaneously. Or at least before they expire! I’ve also watched the three new lectures in the Stanford Election 2016 class.
- I celebrate: being back at home. I really like Sydney and am always happy to be there, but always happier at home.
- I am grateful for: a solid week of work. Jake, being so wonderful with the kids. my kids, being magical creatures. my life.
- I focused on my health by:
- oh man, did nothing this week. it was a week of just surviving it.
- I made art: no art this week. i am hoping with a new OLW, I’ll do some next week.
- I let go of: trying to balance between my two teams while in sydney. i just did the best i could.
- Core Desire Check-in:
- Kind: I’ve been kind the boys. When my plane landed on Friday, I went to N’s school for halloween parade and D’s school for his dance. It was a long, long day.
- Strong: I am not super-strong at the moment. Jetlagged and tired mostly.
- True: I was true to myself in Sydney. I went to the beach, chose smaller social outings and did whatever I thought was the right thing to do along the way.
- Generous: I’ve been generous to work this week.
- Brave: I was brave with all the social work engagements. Those are tough tough for me and then a social at David’s school Friday night.
Here’s to another good week! 🙂

I read Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy because my doctor recommended it to me when I said that I wasn’t feeling great lately and I was down more often than I was up.
She said she had heard good things about the book and wanted to see if I wanted to give it a try (she also recommended therapy of course.)
I read this book very quickly and really liked the ideas behind it and the methodology he uses. It works for someone like me.
