Today I Know – Week 51

This week’s inspiration comes from on of Tam’s lessons from Life Book 2014. I used acrylics on the flowers and border. It was quick to make and gives me a lot of joy!

prompt says: today i know that i really like to

Merry Christmas!

From our home to yours. I hope your day is as magical as ours.

Stitching Circles – Looking Back

As I was designing my projects for 2014, I wanted to pick something different that didn’t involve drawing or coloring of any kind. Inspired by the class I was taking at the time, I decided to do a stitching project. I spent a lot of time perusing through pinterest, picking ideas I would like to try.

I started this project with a lot of enthusiasm. I really loved how cute they each turned out to be. I would keep my needle and embroidery thread in my bag and work on it as I waited at carpool.

But it didn’t take long before it felt like a lot of work and not nearly as much fun. Some of the designs took forever to finish and I felt more and more under the gun where it was more important to finish than to enjoy the process and take my time.

So much for the serenity I was hoping to get from this project.

Once I realized what was happening, I just didn’t feel the urge to continue anymore. And made the conscious decision to walk away from the obligation to finish out my year.

Looking at all the ones I did do, I still feel like it was very worthwhile and a lot of fun.

and very much something different for me. I cherish all of these.

December Daily 2014 – Day Twenty Three

Day Twenty-three is all about cookie decorating. We made sugar cookies from scratch and then had a ton of fun decorating them all. I loved the layout of this page so much that it pained me to add photos and ruin the balanced look. So I decided to do the best of both worlds. I created two flaps with photos but you can raise them both and still see the original layout.

and here’s the page after all the photos and words:

here’s the full layout with the flaps open:

and the right side:

and a tilted look to see all the shimmer:

yey. merry christmas eve.

A Book a Week – Fracking King

I read The Fracking King because Amazon recommended it.

It was really short, really weird and I am not sure I loved it. I also didn’t hate it. But there are so many books in the world, that it always depresses me a little when I read something I don’t love.

Savor Project – 2014 – Spread Forty-Five

This is one of the Week in the Life pages I made that will be going into my Savor album for 2014:

and finally this one is all about my art.

December Daily 2014 – Day Twenty Two

Day Twenty-two is about this wonderful street in San Carlos where the whole street is crazy lit up with holiday lights. I also spent a few hours helping my friend’s son with his math homework so I tucked his sheet into the book.

Monthly Projects – May – Shoes

All the way back in May, I had done a month-long project of drawing shoes every day. I never got to share it so I figured as we come to the end of the year, I want to make sure to share my shoes. This wasn’t my favorite of the monthly projects but I do love some of the shoes.

Here they all are. I have front and side views to show the shimmer:

A total of 17 shoes. Not a full month’s worth but a good lot nonetheless.

Remember This – Week 46

For the life of me, I couldn’t get a good shot of this page. This month’s assignment was to write a letter to myself on my word. I painted my whole cardstock with lots and lots of color. Then I painted the middle white. Then I made some lines using the side of a palette knife and then journaled on it.

I am not a fan of the black lines but I do love all the color on the edges and in the lettering. You win some, you lose some.

75 Day Sketch Challenge

During the summer, I finally signed up for classes at SketchBook Skool after pondering them for way too long. The first class I signed up for was “seeing.” It had some of my very favorite sketchers like Danny (who is in all the classes, of course) and Brenda Swenson and Cathy Johnson and Andrea Joseph. Once all the people I loved were on the list, I just couldn’t not sign up.

When it was Brenda Swenson’s week, she shared with us what she calls the 75-Day Sketch Challenge. The way the challenge works is that you have:

  • Complete 75 drawings in 75 days. If you miss a day, you have to do two the next, etc. You have 75 days total.
  • You can only use black or blue pen.
  • You can use any technique, size, and subject you want.
  • No pencil allowed. No exceptions.

I will say I was quite intimidated. I have never not used a pencil. The pen was scaring me. But I decided to tackle it anyway.

For the first few days I used a fountain pen. I liked the very first drawing but really disliked all the consequent ones. Here are the first few:

That was the first 14 sketches. Then I decided to use a ballpoint pen instead (thanks to Andrea) and I realized I liked it so very much better.

After a few more days, I started to feel uninspired. I was tired and out of ideas.

I contemplated quitting a bunch of times. Then we went camping and I drew some in the car:

and something simple at the campground:

and then our tent:

and while the boys took a walk, I drew a camper nearby:

I tried to draw Jake’s shoes:

but i hated it so i decided it didn’t count as #31 and drew these penguins instead:

I then tried to draw my mixer and didn’t have much success even though I tried twice:

then I tried my neighbor’s house:

then i got frustrated again. the next few are small and inconsequential:

and the car across the street:

and another neighbor’s house:

then i drew the counter at McDonalds and some scissors and the Advil bottle. I was running out of ideas indeed.

then I drew the smaller items on my table:

and the mini grill in the backyard:

i felt like each time i took a step forward, i was taking two steps backward:

then i drew more items from my desk:

a spoon and a knife that i hated:

some more not-so-great drawings:

then some more desk items like brushes and knives and scissors:

even when i didn’t have time, i tried to draw something, however small.

i drew this knife as i was waiting for the kids to get out of class.

and for the final two, I drew Nathaniel’s flip flops and some pliers.

And there we are 75 sketches in 75 days. Zero pencil!

Even though I dislike as many as I dislike, I am very proud to have accomplished this many days in a row and I am no longer afraid of just starting with a pen!

December Daily 2014 – Day Twenty One

Day Twenty-one is about going to the movies to see The Imitation Game, probably my favorite movie of 2014. The right side tells the story of our weekend and has a little photo of Nathaniel looking in the car where we seem to have plants growing.

Listen with Intent – Week 51

And finally, for the last week, I decided to set an intention to embrace life. To embrace all the wonderful messages from the universe, from my community, my friends, my kids, my wonderful husband, my loving family. Embrace all the good in my life.

Here’s the pin where I got the lettering..
