David says:
I gave this story five stars because I liked that the investigators found gold doubloons.
I liked Chris because he was clever and saved the investigators many different times. He invited them along on this dives and he shared his gold with them when he found some. He was nice to the boys and to his father and I was very happy that he got to help his father get better and go back to Greece in the end.
My least favorite part was when the villains were trying to steal the money and tied up the boys. I liked how Jupiter solved the mystery and came to rescue the other investigators. I didn’t like that the thieves made it look like there was a ghost on the island because they were trying to keep people away.
I liked that everything worked out in the end: the movie and Chris.
Reading a book a week with my six-year-old son David is a weekly project for 2011. You can read more about it here.

It was a relatively quiet day here today. We started the day late but still did the same routine of exercise+shower and then family photos.

I adore, love, cherish these three boys more than anything else in the world.

We took family photos. And I adore, love, cherish these photos. Even when they are so imperfect.

Even when they are trying to squirm out of my arms.

And especially when we are all laughing unabashedly.

We then rested for a while. Sketching, art journaling, and so forth. Then we took a long long walk and I am off to read to my boy and then date night tonight. A quiet, lovely weekend day here. Hope yours was as well.
Three Things I’m Grateful For:
1. I am grateful that we have date night. I love going to the movies.
2. I am grateful for our nice long walk. I love talking a stroll with the whole family.
3. I am grateful that I started journaling again, I missed it.
Three Things David’s Grateful For:
1. I am grateful mommy and I are going to read my book. * {his pick for the journal}
2. I am grateful that I played wii.
3. I am grateful that I am copying one of my books (he’s writing all the words in the rocket book into his own notebook.).

Jake had another relatively busy week at work. Several meetings but not that many night ones this time. He had a paper due for his tax class which is now over. His paper turned out quite good, in my opinion. It was well written and interesting. It’s amazing to me that he can do that in one day, at the last minute, whereas I take forever to write a well-sounding paragraph. He has always been good at writing papers.

This was a very quiet, uneventful week for me. I’ve been working to take it easy and it’s been relaxing but also a bit unnerving. I think when I tend to relax, I overdo it and then cannot muster the motivation to do anything, which, in turn, depresses me and feeds into my bad mood. I need to find a good balance of working and resting, doing both with vigor and awareness. It’s an ongoing struggle for me. However, I am enjoying the summer days and not yet looking forward to the school craze.
david
David has been working and playing a lot. He’s spent a lot of time with his legos and books this week. I love to watch him play and I love to listen to him read. I am amazed at how well he can read. He is also riding his bike and doing well with both swimming and soccer. We’ve been practicing the multiplication tables during our daily walks and he’s doing extremely well with that, too. I love how emotional and loving and kind David is. He reminds me of me when I was his age and I am trying to remind myself to be very gentle with him.

Nathaniel is enjoying having David at home and the two of them build legos together. They also fill up the two trucks with toys and drive them around the house. Nathaniel picked a truck book for himself from the library this week and has been asking me to read it every single night. I love the little time we spend together right before bedtime and I know it will be a memory I will cherish long after he grows up.

Us Right Now is a weekly project for 2011. You can read more about it here.

And we’ve come to the end of another week. They’re passing all too quickly lately. And I’m feeling antsy because I feel like days are passing without my using my time well but I am not exactly sure what I want to do with my time which puts me in an unpleasant conundrum.
The little boy has been playing legos a lot lately.

The big boy, too.

Here he is watching Nathaniel put something together.

And then Nathaniel rushes over to get another piece.

And talks his brother into helping him.

David leaves for soccer and Nathaniel is left playing all by himself.

And now it’s dinner time. It’s the end of the week. I am tired. But this weekend is wide open. And I will not put any pressure on myself this weekend. No art journal pages, no todo lists. I will just relax. Let’s see how it goes.
Three Things I’m Grateful For:
1. I am grateful that I made another art journal page today. Even though I don’t like it, I am thankful to take time for art no matter what.
2. I am grateful for Jake who does the grocery shopping.
3. I am grateful for the quietness of life right now. I love quiet.
Three Things David’s Grateful For:
1. I am grateful I have soccer. * {his pick for the journal}
2. I am grateful that I played with Nathaniel.
3. I am grateful that I read some of my library books.
Ok I am officially furious. I am done with this total mess of weight gain. I have to tell you it’s not as much about the weight (though, of course, that plays a part.) as it is about working so hard and having the results go in the opposite direction. I still exercise 5K every day.
This might not seem like a big feat to most people. But it is to me. I hate exercise. This week I hit my 300th consecutive day of exercise. I’ve been doing this for so long now and yet I still loathe it. I am not looking forward to it. I am just tolerating it. And I know it’s good for me and it will help keep my metabolism high so I suck it up and I do it. Day after day. I show up and I do it. Because I do it on the treadmill, I know that I am not doing it halfway. I am doing this. I am working hard at it.
And yet.
And yet it does not appear to be working lately. I don’t buy the plateau argument, nor doI buy the muscle one. Something isn’t working right here and I am committed to fixing it. I haven’t come this far and I am not working this hard for these results. Something will change.
and here’s this week’s card:

Healthy for Life is a weekly project for 2011. You can read more about it here.

Another quiet day here. I have been feeling tired so I am taking things slowly, being more deliberate and trying to slow down. Especially since summer will end soon and morning rush will come back into our lives.
I love watching Nathaniel look through books and magazines.

Which he loves to do.

I took both kids to the library today and David checked out a plethora of books and was super-thrilled. He thanked me like 40 times. And I tried to make sure I got at least one photo of him today.

Now he’s in swim class and I am about to put the little boy down. I feel tired. Worn out. So my hunch is I will just lie on the couch tonight and not be super-productive. The items on my todo list will have to wait just a little bit longer.
Three Things I’m Grateful For:
1. I am grateful that I I signed up for two more online classes today. I love taking classes.
2. I am grateful for our trip to the library and seeing both of the kids love books so much. Libraries are magical.
3. I am grateful for the lack of time-sensitive todo items. I am grateful that I can just relax because I know I need the rest.
Three Things David’s Grateful For:
1. I am grateful I went to the library and checked out books. * {his pick for the journal}
2. I am grateful that we got three comic books too.
3. I am grateful that I played with my legos.
I am so sorry for the delay. I wish one of you would have reminded me that I dropped the ball. I absolutely get irked when people say they will announce a recipient on a particular day and then the day comes and goes without a mention. So I am truly, deeply sorry for messing up.
According to the random integer generator, the recipient was commenter #9. Which is: Lisa S. (the one who has an anniversary on the 23rd)
Lisa, if you see this before I email you, feel free to email me, otherwise I will make sure to email you ASAP.
thank you to everyone for your kind comments. I hope you will join us in the festival, it is sure to be a lot lot lot of fun.
Here are the sketches from this week.
Wednesday, I made this boy.

the next day, I did this quick but sweet elephant and mouse:

Friday I did this girl reading. i love it:

on Saturday I wanted to do something more involved so I did this angel. Nothing like the amazing original:

on Sunday, I did this cute mouse.

Monday was a quickie with the girl and birds.

Tuesday, I wanted to do this big scene but i messed up the proportions and ended up with the girl and just stopped.

and here we are. as always some are ok others not so great. let’s see what next week brings.

Last night, I went to the movies with a friend and when I came home I found two pages of notes on my bed:

says “I love you very much. turn page over.”

the back says: “I really missed you and I had a bad night.”

second page says “And I peed like you told me to. Turn page over.” He’s supposed to make sure to pee before he goes to sleep since he’s not wearing overnight diapers.

there you go. My super super sweet son. How can I not love him to bits?

Today was a quiet day. The kids played.

and I decided to take some shots of David.

he’s so beautiful.

and sweet and kind.

the little one was less accommodating but that’s ok. It ebbs and flows and that’s life.

Uneventful day. Work, meeting, walk, sketch, exercise, play. Same wonderful life as always. Just basking in gratitude.
Three Things I’m Grateful For:
1. I am grateful that I am letting myself be lazy. I know I need to rest so I am resting. Reading. Not judging. Just being.
2. I am grateful for a sweet box containing some new product and some of my CHA layouts back. love seeing them again.
3. I am grateful for a clean house and a quieter rest of the week.
Three Things David’s Grateful For:
1. I am grateful I had ice cream for breakfast. * {his pick for the journal}
2. I am grateful that I finished the Pokemon movies.
3. I am grateful that I watched a few lego movies.
I picked Clarity on a total whim, too. To be honest, the cover looked a bit creepy and I wasn’t sure if I was going to like it. But I really did. I enjoyed the story, I liked the characters and I found myself drawn to the book and didn’t want to put it down. I read the whole thing in a day and sometimes these are exactly the kinds of books I like to read. This was a fun read and if you like this genre, i recommend it.
I’m glad I read both this week and last week’s books. They’re what I needed to get back into reading. I was grumpy but now I am enjoying reading again. Since I read while I exercise, it’s hard to get into it unless the book is really flowing. And this one was.
Here are some more journal pages.
This is a simple one just cause I didn’t want to draw after the last few. It’s using pan pastels and says “spread your wings.”

And back to drawing. Watercolor pencils, rubons, stamps. Says “Never fear. Everyone wants more friends. Reach out.”

I decided to go pretty simple for this one. Just a floating balloon. Used watercolor pencils. Says “do not let your dreams float away.”

And for the last page, I visualized a door but it didn’t quite turn out the way I’d hoped. It’s watercolor pencils as well. says “You get to choose the doors you open and close.”

And with that my little journal is finished. I will post a video and all the pages together next week. Thank you for letting me share.
I am creating art journaling pages daily for June (and maybe longer). You can read more about it and the book I am using here.
This is one of the projects I did for Authentique Paper for CHA Summer.

Journaling Reads:
in 2006, almost a year after we moved to the bay area we started going to Lemo’s Farm for halloween. They have a little train, a lot of pumpkins, and a petting zoo. It has now become our yearly tradition. We go early just as they open and it’s not so crowded so we have a ton of fun playing!
