A Book a Week – Reconstructing Amelia

I read about Reconstructing Amelia also because I read that it was being made into a movie and I knew I would like to make sure I read it first. It’s about a mom who’s trying to understand what exactly happened to her daughter who commits suicide.

It was depressing.

It was also not amazingly well written or super-interesting. In my opinion.

I am not sure what I think about it. And maybe the movie can be better than the book.

And, of course, I’ll be glad I read it first.

Savor Project – 2014 – Spread Nine

This week’s all about the skiing in Tahoe. I scanned our badges from the trip and made a photo of them.

I also scanned their progress reports from the ski school and made a spread with them.

so grateful.

Remember This – Week 12

This week’s page is also from The Walk. Week two. One of the assignments this week was to collage a self portrait and then write/collage a list of things about yourself. What you’re good at. What’s your essence, etc. I decided to draw mine and made this girl.

My girl is holding a box. Last year, when I was in a Coaching course, we did a visualization exercise where we were to find out our Captains and what came to me was this little girl and she gave me a box. When I opened it, it was filled with light. Over that course and the next few months, I’ve come to believe that it represented the light we each have within ourselves and she was giving me mine and telling me to open it so it can shine through me. And also that this is what I want to do with others. Help them let their light shine through.

So once I drew my girl, I made some lines in the background and journaled all over it.

Listen with Intent – Week 12

Since last week is about releasing, this week had to be about stopping and listening. Once I release, I am now ready to stop and to truly listen. This also requires a lot of bravery. I need to be willing to hear what’s being said. I need to be willing to stop and not go go go.

The lettering I used here comes from this pin.

I chose to do a bird sitting again because birds are my image for 2014 and I really liked this one which looked like it was stopping to listen.

Weekly Diary – March 23 2014

Here are photos from this week:

Last week, we were gone skiing so I didn’t get to post our photos. We did take family pictures so I added those to last week’s post but I will put all the other photos here. So this one might be a bit longer than usual. I haven’t been taking a lot of photos this year though. I can’t decide if I want to change that.

David was gone all day at a birthday so Nathaniel and I painted with watercolors.

and color pencils.

I showed him how to draw a poppy (which I just learned during my class with Lisa).

then he practiced his lowercase letters.

here they are, finished.

then he filled the certificate.

and i reminded him that he was practicing his lowercase letters so he had to do it all over again.

he had a playdate this week, too, where they played minigolf in the house.

and then we left to go skiing. I didn’t take any photos all weekend but at some point we went downstairs to the firepit to make some smores and i grabbed my camera.

and asked Jake to take some photos.

my face was so burned from skiing in the sun.

but i love them anyway.

the boys liked the smores.

and had a few each.

and they really liked the skiing too.

and got much better.

they get report cards at the end of the day.

which i love reading.

when we got back, it was time for family photos.

we said we love skiing.

and then tickled.

and tickled more.

just looking at these makes me smile even now.

and here we go. so grateful for my life. i hope your week was lovely, too.

Learning with David – Week 6

This class is by udacity.com and it’s a math class called Introductory Algebra Review.

Learning with David is a project for 2014 that I am doing with my 9-year-old son. You can read more about it here.

Today I Know – Week 11

This week was all about wings. I randomly googled wings and picked the first one I liked. I then drew and painted the inside with white paint. And then I used my peerless watercolors and some watercolor pencils to add some color inside the wings. And then I used the Stabilo All to outline each feather. And there we are.

prompt says: today i know that i am still afraid of

I wrote about how i am still afraid of not knowing what the future will hold.

Stitching Circles – Week 11

This week’s stitching also comes from urban threads. Something simple this week. Just backstitch and satin stitch. The word says “warm.” Nothing super special but, still, I like it.

A Book a Week – If I Stay and Where She Went

I read If I Stay because I read that it was going to be made into a movie and I knew I had to read it first. And then I had to read Where She Went too, of course.

I read them both in one sitting.

Swallowed them up. They were absolutely great. If this genre is your cup of tea, you will like these.

And hopefully the movie will be as nice, too.

Savor Project – 2014 – Spread Eight

This week’s a mishmash. Some valentine’s leftovers, some fun one off photos I love, etc. I journaled about David’s day with his best friend and about being at the kids’ school.

Love that happy photo of Nathaniel.

Remember This – Week 11

This week, I decided to switch to showing you my work from The Walk. The first week, our assignment was to create a collage to represent The Carnival and the Campfire. Without going into all the detail of the class, the Carnival represents the distractions that take you away from your essence and places where people tell you who and how you have to be and how you’re never enough and what you do is never enough, etc. And the campfire is where you’re perfect, enough and accepted (welcomed even) just the way you are. This is different for everyone, of course. For me, it always about being enough and accepted.

Instead of using collage, inspired by someone who posted on the fb group, I decided to draw a ferris wheel for my carnival and a fire in the woods for my campfire. I then wrote all my journaling along the lines of the wheels and the bottom of the fire (as well as the flames.) The journaling is all about what you hear in these two locations.

This was a very powerful assignment for me and I am struggling with both locations in different ways. My version of my carnival is mostly active in my head and my campfire seems mostly unfeasible so my biggest takeaway from this is that I am the biggest impediment to my healing. (Not that this was a huge surprise.) On the positive side, this also means I don’t need anyone or anything else to heal. I just need me.

Listen with Intent – Week 11

Another step in brave listening is releasing what I am holding on to. For me to be able to really hear, I need to stop the noise and I need to release the thoughts, ideas, beliefs I am holding on to. Part of listening and hearing is not carrying preconceived ideas. So this week’s intent is to release.

The lettering I used here comes from Calligraphy Alphabets Made Easy.

I chose to do a balloon because it’s a great representation of releasing something I might cherish and hold on to and releasing it in the short term feels a bit painful.
