A Book a Week – the storied life of aj fikry

I can’t remember why read The Storied Life of A. J. Fikry. Maybe it was an Amazon book of the month? Not sure.

But I am so glad I did. It’s a lovely, cute little book about a bookstore owner and a girl who works at a publishing house. It’s a book for book lovers. It’s a simple, easy read that’s sweet and makes you happy.

Recommended.

Fifty-Two Stamps – Week 9

For this week’s stamp, I took another simple idea and wanted to run with it. I made this little tag and I feel like, like last week’s, it can be used so many little and big ways. I like stamps that can do that.

And here’s the stamp:

one more stamp carved. i’m enjoying this little project.

Note to Self – Week 9

For this first page, I used Tascha Parkinson’s lesson from Life Book 2014. The subject was about overcoming fears and she made a fish with popups. I decided to take her idea but instead of fears, I wrote my core desired feelings.

I made mine a lotus flower where each leaf is a desired feeling I have and my word of the year. The idea being that if I embrace them all, I will bloom. These feelings make me bloom. So each of the front petals lifts up and the words are underneath.

the text says: you get to choose how you feel

Because I do. Every day. every moment. I get to choose.

here are some shots that show it better:

from the side:

with the petals a bit more open:

note to self: your desired feelings help you be the best version of yourself.

Everyday Brave – Week 8

This week’s page was much more fun to make after last week’s struggles. I did a mixture of drawing from life and drawing from pictures. For the left side, I drew this colorful pen Nathaniel brought home from a birthday party. When I was little, I had the exact same pen where you can use these lovely interchangeable tips. It was really fun to draw this.

The right side was a result of my dreaming about the seaside. I love a lot of different things but there’s nothing like water to calm me, ground me, and make me feel serene. I love this magical house that brings me peace just by looking at it.

And there we are. Here’s another week.

Weekly Diary – March 1 2015

This week started with the boys going back to school and me getting sick. I woke up congested and shivering. I made it through Monday and Tuesday but Wednesday I knew that I had to take some time off so I rested most of the rest of the week. so much for getting back on track. Even despite the sickness, I did make some progress this week, just not as much as I had hoped to.

I am learning to give myself grace. Learning to remember that things take time and that each day is a new opportunity to get just a bit closer to the life I want to live but also that it’s only one day and i can try all over again the next day. Just trying to be patient with myself.

In the spirit of keeping tabs on my priorities and goals weekly, here’s some of what worked and didn’t work this week so far:

Worked Well:

  • I did multiple days with at least 10K steps this week.
  • I ate healthier and drank water almost every day this week.
  • I helped finalize the mother-son book club we’re starting for 4th grade boys.
  • I had a wonderful, long chat with David on Friday night and spent a lovely breakfast with Nathaniel on Saturday morning.
  • I journaled almost every day.
  • I hosted and advised David and two of his friends for their tech challenge scientific journal
  • I set up a vacation for Jake and me for this upcoming weekend.
  • I am trying to see if I can make a plan for April.
Needs more Work:
  • I’ve been sick :(.
  • Still feeling disorganized and not-grounded. I’m making progress on this but it’s one of those things where I take two steps forward and then three back and then five forward and it’s just going to take a bit of time to get it right.
  • I’m still wishing i ate more veggies, drank more water, and exercised more.

Here are a few more photos from the last week:

I didn’t take any photos during the week this week. This year, in general, has been low on photos so far. Nathaniel and I went to the local Cafe on Saturday morning at 6am when they were only serving coffee. It was just us two at the cafe.

We did some workbooks.

And some math and telling time. people started to trickle in and they started serving food so we got some.

and i tried to take photos.

i wanted some serious ones but he was busy being his silly self.

and made both of us laugh.

today we took some family photos.

my boys have been growing up so quickly.

that i know i will cherish these silly faces.

and i will be so glad i took these photos.

not to mention all the laughter.

they really love the silly faces the best.

though today nathaniel decided to add a shruggie to the mix.

which David decided was an excellent idea.

and here we are. Another full week. I am so grateful for my life.

David and Nathaniel’s Books of Happy Memories – Week 7

Here’s this week’s offering from David:

A plants vs zombies scene david drew a long time ago. I love looking at this.

And one from Nathaniel:

Some Satrbucks cards Nathaniel loves and a few photos of him when he was much younger.

Stories of Twenty-Fifteen – Week 8

Here’s this week’s story:

Title: Practicing Basketball
Story:
David’s class started their basketball practice and games in November. From November to March, they will have practice and a game each week. As opposed to many other boys in his class, David doesn’t play any basketball (or other similar sports) outside of school. This means that the weekly practice is all he gets.

In hopes of giving him a little more time to practice, Jake took both the boys to the park this week. As the boys practiced, I worked on my computer. Jake was shooting hoops, trying to teach David how to steal the ball from right under the net. I asked them if they could take a little break so I could take a photo of David shooting.

They were willing to accommodate me so David grabbed the ball and gave it a shot. It was the very perfect moment because David threw and it went right into the basket!

I am not a sporty person. I have never played any sports I wasn’t required to. I am way too clumsy and uncoordinated to be good at anything. Even when skiing and skating (the only two sports I can do) I am cautious and therefore not very good. Sports is just not my thing. It’s never been and I don’t think it will ever be at this point.

Which is exactly why I love watching my kids play. I love it when Jake takes them out there and works with them to improve their balance, their skills, and their dexterity. I love watching David try again and again. I love that he’s willing to keep going. I love that he’s getting to experience playing a team sport. I love that he keeps trying relentlessly.

I love sharing the things that I know how to do with my boys. It’s special for me to pass on my own joys and learnings. But, what I love even more is watching them do things I never could. Watching them ride bikes. Watching them sing or play an instrument. Watching them play sports. I haven’t done any of these things. I get to experience them for the first time through them. I get to see how amazing it feels to have your kids be better than you. To be more. To do more.

It’s a magical feeling.

You Choose – Week 6

This week’s pick is one that makes me feel every one of my core desired feelings: the sea. I love the sea. I crave the sea. I am so grateful for the sea. There’s nothing as magical as the sound of the waves hitting the shore. I am so glad to be so close to the sea and I need to remember to visit the sea way more often.

here is a side look for the shimmer:

here’s to embracing serenity.

Note to Self – Week 8

This was another page where I just went rogue. I wanted to do something different from Tam’s lesson. I didn’t know what but I wanted an angel. Not sure of why, I just began to draw so I could see where it would take me.

I ended up with this girl with golden wings (maybe it’s the same girl from last week?) crouching down and her wings fully open.

Text says: find your wings

a reminder to have courage. to open my wings fully and fly. It’s implied that we all have wings. We’re not getting new ones, we’re not making wings, we’re finding the ones we already have because we all already have them.

here’s a sideways look:

Note to Self: you already have all you need.

A Book a Week – Perfect

I read Perfect because I loved Rachel Joyce’s other book so much. This was not as good. It was a considerably sadder story and I kept wincing as I read it.

Even with that, I am glad I did and I still think she’s a lovely author and i will read whatever she comes out with next but if you’ve never read her I recommend you start with The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry.

Fifty-Two Stamps – Week 8

For this week’s stamp, I just did something fun. A little banner that I can use in my notebook or even in my scrapbook pages. Something small and simple but very reusable.

Here’s what the stamp looks like:

A fun little, useful one.
