Weekly Reflection 2017 – 36

How I shone this week:  Here’s how I shone this week: I made it through!! This was an insane week. Monday was a holiday. Tuesday I took off to be with Jake for his birthday but then worked at night until 7pm and then went to bed soon after so I could wake up at 3:45am and get on a plane to Seattle where I spent all day working and then made it back home 1:30am that night (next morning?) only to wake up 5 hours later and go to Nathaniel’s class for a grade lead meeting. And then drove to work and then back up to the school for David’s back to school night. Friday, I went to exercise at work, drove back home to take a phone call for a school event i am helping chair, then i went to midday book club and then back to work until 6pm and then came home, did math with David and then did work while Nathaniel slept and David went to see a movie with Jake. Phew. I am tired just writing all of this down. But I did it all. I tried to do it with grace, too. I showed up. For work, for jake, for my kids, for friends, and for myself. phew!

Things I wanted to get Done:

  • Work: Cleaned email! (though already a bit of a mess now) Didn’t do blog post, went to Seattle, sent the email, started the dashboard, got the email done.
  • Personal: Exercised only 4 times but it was all that was feasible. Ate clean save for the chocolate (even during travel) Didn’t journal enough. Did mapmaker 6 but not 7 yet. Did OLW September and cashed check. I am continuing with my fun new scrapping system and I love it.
  • Family: went to school for back to school night and N’s conference. We had Jake’s birthday day and took photos. woot!!

I celebrate: surviving this week.

I am grateful for: traveling safe. being safe.

I nourished myself by: sleeping and exercising as much as possible.

Reflecting on my worries: I managed to exercise as much as possible. i survived wednesday and thursday. david had a good week. nathaniel is making friends and adjusting well. packet may or may not be a disaster. time will tell. i got stuff done! things are ok. flight had no problem, i made it back in time. i did not disappoint Jake. phew!

I let go of: being mean to myself about the chocolate but i do want to experiment with trying to stop.

Core Desire Check-in (bold, mindful, nourish, love):

  • bold: all of this week was bold.
  • mindful: mindful that i need to get more rest this week.
  • nourish: this one is all about chocolate and letting go of the need to have it.
  • love: i love that my life is so full and textured and varied and layered.

What made me laugh this week: i laughed during book club and with my friends at book club.

What I tolerated this week: not enough sleep!

My mood this week was: tired, worried.
I forgive myself for:  being anxious.
What I love right now:  i love that I have a day off this week (i am taking it off for my birthday.) and that this week is getting closer to a “normal” week.

Here’s to a great week 37.

On the way back from Kuranda, we got the Skyrail which was a huge hit with the kids. We also laughed at these fake Instagram frames that were along the path.

Books I Read This Week 2017 – 36

I read the The Marriage Pact in one breath. Very fast paced, unbelievable but still kept me on my toes. I also liked the ending. There were some interesting thoughts on marriage in the book, too.

I then moved to The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl which was quick and easy read but not great. Not as great as some of the others I read this year. Like Luvie’s one.

Of Mess and Moxie was 200th book of 2017 for me. Jen Hatmaker is awesome, this book is awesome, I loved it.

I then read Amanda Wakes Up which was an easy, fun read about politics and media.

I am now reading The Locals and enjoying it so far. It’s not 100% engaging but I like the characters and I like the storytelling so far.

September 2017 – Travel Journal – 4

You can read about the start of this project here.

Our first day there, we went snorkeling at the great barrier reef. I didn’t bring any electronics with me on the boat. We took this with Jake’s phone on the way back. The kids didn’t throw up at all, which was a miracle. There was no wifi in our AirBnb so I was only able to print one photo.

Nourish Me – 36

Mind:

  • I read: A few articles here and there but nothing to write home about.
  • I learned: I’ve been doing Stephanie’s Map Maker class still! I decided to take the Courageworks class.
  • I watched:  We watched Ozark a bit.

Body:

  • Exercise: This week was tricky with two morning trips to the kids’ schools, so I adjusted.
    • Monday: First day of school so I missed my 7am Body Pump, I had to change it up and took Power Yoga which was super hard.
    • Tuesday: made it to Body Pump class just in time.
    • Wednesday: took a new Body Pump Express class.
    • Thursday: gBarre
    • Friday: Body Pump Express and was too tired to stay for Pilates.
    • Saturday&Sunday: resting all weekend
  • Food:
    • Veggies I had: delicata squash, eggplants, zucchini, cucumbers, broccoli rice, brussel sprouts, okra and spinach.
    • Protein: chicken breasts, chicken sausage, ground chicken, pulled beef and eggs.
    • I am a bit more hungry between meals now but can’t tell if it’s hormonal.
    • I’ve been eating too much chocolate and need to just quit it.
    • No coffee for eight weeks now. Still drinking a lot of mint tea.
    • All the others: I’ve been still a bit less diligent than usual this week but i did a face mask and have been flossing, putting cream on,  and taking my vitamins more often than not.

Soul:

  • I rested: Still sleeping strong unless I drink after 7pm. Even if I wake up now, I seem to fall back asleep.
  • I connected: Connected with my good friend Leslie and my friends Cole and Ty!
  • I journaled: I did simple daily journaling but didn’t journal on my MapMaker yet (but I will!)
  • I made art: I did my last mapmaker homework!

So grateful for my progress, I have more shots on instagram.

I ended up not journaling at all during the first week I was there for work. I was going to go back and document it all retroactively, but I decided to just start when the official vacation started instead. Here’s the day the boys all arrived and we flew to Cairns.

2017 Stories – 36 – First Day of School

This was the first week of school for my kids. After being at two different schools last year, they are finally again in the same school. Nathaniel started third grade and David started seventh. Holy cow! Seventh!

Nathaniel’s been really brave and transitioning to a new school and new classmates pretty wonderfully. And David’s taken to seventh grade like bread to butter. He’s taking a Forensic Science elective and also a Yearbook one.

They are both doing Cross Country at the moment and MathCounts starts the week after next.

Here’s to a wonderful school year for both of my wonderful boys!

Living Intentionally 2017 – 36

Weekly Intention: This is an insane week. Monday is a day off. Tuesday I am taking the day off because it’s Jake’s birthday and then Wednesday I fly to Seattle at 5am and come back at midnight. Thursday I have to be at the kids’ school at 8am and then work all day and then back at the school for Middle School back to school night. Friday I have to go back to work for meetings. Somewhere in there, I have to squeeze in exercise. And continue to eat well. I am scared but I know I will make it through.

  • Work: clean email.
  • Work:  blog post.
  • Work: go to Seattle.

  • Family: take photos!

This month’s intention is: September: Shine Patiently:  September is a month of change. New year. Maybe new school. New routines. New season. This month always comes with changes, adjustments, and revisiting of schedules. Be patient with yourself. Be patient with others. Remember to shine. Even if it’s in small doses. Great reminder to me this month.

Ways to Shine this week:

  • One: Bold: It will be bold to survive Wednesday’s adventure to Seattle.
  • Two: Open: Open to the possibility that this week will be smooth and i will survive it all.
  • Three: Heal/Nourish: I will rest as much as I need to recover from the crazy Wednesday.

I am looking forward to: seeing my Seattle friends in person.

This week’s challenges: Wednesday and Thursday will be challenging.

Top Goals:

  • Work: go to Seattle and do dashboard.
  • Personal: exercise+food+journaling.
  • Family: Jake’s birthday and school!

I will focus on my core desires (bold, mindful, nourish, love) by: trying to take it all one day at a time.

This week, I will say yes to: making it work.

This week, I will say no to: more sadness. i want to snap out of it already.

I am worried that:  i won’t exercise. i’ll stop eating well. wednesday will break me. thursday will break me. david will have a bad week. Nathaniel will not make new friends. Packet will be a disaster. I’ll get noting done. Things will fall apart. My flight will have a problem and I won’t make it back home in time. I will disappoint Jake.

This week, I want to remember:  i have to take things one step at a time and it will be okay.

Weekly Reflection 2017 – 35

How I shone this week: This week was a struggle. The first week of school meant two trips to school. Five trips to work. A get together with a friend. It was busy, crazy, overwhelming. I was tired, grumpy, and rushed all week. But I still showed up everywhere I was supposed to be. I gave everything my 110%. I did the best I could.

Things I wanted to get Done:

  • Work: Behind in email still. Bought more tickets to Seattle but still didn’t do blog post. done with packet but never feeds done. No work on dashboard, did the deck+milestones.
  • Personal: Exercised 5 times this week. Ate pretty clean, but too much chocolate. cashed check. journaled for the system but not otherwise. didn’t do mapmaker yet.
  • Family: went to school Monday and Wednesday. Took photos. Made no plan for David.

I celebrate: first week of school!

I am grateful for: my husband. my kids. their school.

I nourished myself by: eating chocolate. yes, i know not good.

Reflecting on my worries: i managed to exercise and ate well outside of chocolate. david loves his schedule. nathaniel’s adjusting ok. packet might be a disaster, we’ll see. 8am classes seem to be fine. things are still okay.

I let go of: schedule.

Core Desire Check-in (bold, mindful, nourish, love):

  • bold: i was bold about our picking new classes.
  • mindful: mindful that kids are adjusting, i’m adjusting and this was an emotionally tough week.
  • nourish: i would like to be better about my measurements here and see if i can be full again.
  • love: i love how much love is around me.

What made me laugh this week: i laughed a lot with my friend Leslie.

What I tolerated this week: a lot of driving up and down the freeway from school to work.

My mood this week was: cranky and dejected.
I forgive myself for:  being frustrated.
What I love right now:  i love our three day weekend.

Here’s to a great week 36.

September 2017 – Travel Journal – 1

When I went on vacation in Australia, in July, I decided I wanted to try to keep a travel journal for the first time. I would work on it during the vacation and it could be my art for September.

I was already taking my Traveler’s Notebook with me so I picked up one of the blank inserts and covered it with the awesome My Mind’s Eye Hello World collection.

karenika.com

I made a small (doesn’t look so small but remember this was for three weeks’ of journaling) sample of items to take:

karenika.com

It included a lot of washi tape, alphas, journaling tags/stickers, a little paper, some tape, and some envelopes. I didn’t take scissors because I wasn’t checking any luggage and scissors are not allowed on carry ons. I brought tape and a stapler but I didn’t think to bring a glue stick, which I bought there. I also took 3 boxes of Instax film so I could print out on my Instax printer. (which i love!)

I even took the time to make a new watercolor sheet just in case I was in the mood for watercoloring (i was not.)

karenika.com

I wasn’t sure if this would work out but I really hoped it would! (btw, you can see many of my instagram photos from the trip here.)
